Hi Celia, I'm glad to help you out. Yes, brakes do get extremely hot. This is normal. It's from the friction caused by the pad rubbing against the rotor. Try engine braking or downshifting letting go of the accelerator to slow down rather than straight to the brake pedal. The smoke is normal too, new rotors are coated with a rust inhibitor and as you use the brakes for the first few times, this inhibitor burns off and can cause the brakes to 'smoke'. The smell may also be part of this. But while this can be normal, make sure to observe your brakes over the next few days to a week. I hope this helps. Have a nice day.
