Hi Phyllis,
I'm glad to help you out. As per checking, this a guaranteed fit for your 1987 Mercedes Benz 420SEL Base 8 Cyl 4.2L. The fuel sending unit is the fuel level sensor, it gives the capacity level on your fuel gauge if empty, half or full or in between.
