There is no insert. There should have been (included or offered separately) a Ford Logo insert that would go into the very center of the grille and operates on a spring to reveal the key lock for the hood release. I had a very difficult time removing the logo from the old broken grille and "jerryrigging" it to fit into the new grille. However the new grill certainly looks much better than the several pieces of old grille which were barely hanging on.
