Fluted lens refers to the plastic lens cover in front of the bulb. This cover is the outside of the the headlight which also protects the bulb from rain and dirt. It is what turns yellow over time. Some cars, mostly old models had a glass one. Fluting is what bends the light in a certain direction. This is done by the shape of the plastic, sometimes lines are in the plastic. Generally I would say that the headlamp assembly for a Custom vs an Ltd are probably interchangeable if that is the only option. But your car will look weird if you have one of each type of headlamp, kind of like one blue eye and one brown eye. There are generally other small differences between custom and Ltd headlamps, such as whether the turn signal (blinker) bulb is yellow with a clear lens or the bulb is clear with a yellow lens. Compare the photos of each type advertised side-by-side. I accidentally purchased a “custom” headlamp instead of an Ltd headlamp on a 2001 LeSabre. The only difference was the Ltd had a third hole for another sidemarker bulb. The custom had the hole marked, but it wasn’t cut out. I drilled through the plastic and used a razor blade knife that I heated to make a hot knife to cut out the slots in the hole.
