As per location of the product, this item supports the Lift gate during opening and closing.

Answered by Aldrin P. / Sun, Aug 23The support strut keeps the lift gate from "slamming" at the bottom of its travel. Very helpful when your arms are full and loading the back of the vehicle. It slows the door coming down much like a shock-absorber does for a wheel. Well worth the money they cost.

Answered by bob m. / Fri, Aug 28When opening, stand baqck because gate will come up a little more forceful, nothing serious. You will have to use some effort to close gate also. I reall like the supports because the gate would come down on its own during cool and cold weather.
