I thought that this component on my 2003 Kia Spectra simply showed which gear I was in. Not so. The gear selection on the car was becoming quite slow, especially from D to R. I had always been a bit miffed with the 1 llight not coming on when selecting that first gear (mainly for testing purposes). Turns out that this safety switch was doing more than illuminating a lamp. Swapped out the switch (quite a lot of extra stuff has to be removed first, all of it air intake stuff) and now the indicator lights follow the gear selection - and the gear selection is now much sharper and precise. Fantastic.
