Question: Camshaft sensor location 1999 jeep wrangler 4-0?James B. / Mar 23, 2021
Hi,
The camshaft position sensor is always located near the camshaft, often at the top of the valve cover, but it can also be installed from the side of the cylinder head. Check around the head or valve cover and follow any electrical wires and you will for sure find the camshaft position sensor.
Still, we recommend referring to a trusted vehicle specific service repair manual for the location and install procedure. It may require basic automotive knowledge for proper installation.

The 1999 4.0 has a distributor and the cam location sensor is located under the distributor cap.

Answered by sean E. / Tue, Mar 23Question: On my 1998 jeep grand Cherokee 4.0 the engine scanner said it needed a camshaft sensor but I can’t seem to find it. But I was wondering if this distributor sensor is basically the same thing?Skyler H. / Jan 02, 2023
Hi Skyler, I'm glad to assist you. No, it's not. Unfortunately, we don't carry camshaft sensors for the 1998 Grand Cherokee 4.0L models. We suggest checking the local part stores around your area on what they have available to offer you. I hope this helps, and we thank you for inquiring.

That's where the cam sensor is located, yes. It's under the rotor on the distributor.

Answered by Christopher M. / Mon, Jan 02No it is not
They are two different parts
The CAM sensor is a magnetic sensor that reads the position from the fly wheel.

Answered by Vince Z. / Mon, Jan 02Question: The jeep will start, run for a while then shut off and not start for a while (anywhere from a few minutes to a couple hours). Replaced the ECU, that was no help. Any thoughts?Howie / Jun 15, 2023
Hi Howard, I'm glad to assist you. Your vehicle needs an extensive check using the right tools, such as a diagnostic scan tool to isolate the part that is causing the problem. We cannot give clear input since the problem could be more than 1 part (tune-up parts, ignition switch, some sensors, etc). It is best to have it checked by a certified mechanic or an auto repair shop closest to you.
