Hi,
Yes it does need to be painted. We don't do painting on our body parts and only ship them primed. We suggest to have it painted locally so they can correctly match the shade of your paint.

Answered by Arnel E. / Thu, Feb 02My original tailgate was a 2006 Taco with non-metal inside skin and top. The replacement purchase was the remaining fully assembled metal components, painted with black primer. You need the parts from your old one, including non-metal inside skin and top, handle, rods, support straps, bolts, etc. From an automotive paint guy I bought 2 cans of standard grey auto paint primer, 2 spray bomb cans mixed with the original manufacturer's base coat color, 2 cans of standard clear top coat and sprayed it myself by hand. Careful taking off the chromed logos, use appropriate "fish line", no heat!
