Hi Jim, I am pleased to assist you. This thermostat (7-11-2-249-366) for the 2004 BMW Z4 3.0i with a 6-cylinder 3.0L engine fits into the thermostat housing, which mounts directly to the front of the engine’s cylinder head. This component regulates coolant flow between the engine and radiator based on temperature and includes ports for the radiator hoses and often the coolant temperature sensor. It is not part of the reservoir (expansion) tank. The thermostat housing is typically located on the front-right side of the engine bay, below or near the intake manifold.
