Hummer vehicles trace their roots from the Humvee, the multi-purpose wheeled vehicle that the Pentagon commissioned for the US military. The original Hummer H1 was notorious for being a gas guzzler, as it only got 10 miles per gallon. The Hummer H2 is supposed to be a slightly smaller and more efficient model. However, it only got slightly better gas mileage at 10 to 14 miles per gallon.
The Hummer H2’s poor fuel economy was due to the fact that it had a massive 6.0-liter V8 engine under its hood. The Hummer H2 was also exceptionally large and spacious, so it weighed 6,413 pounds. This is approximately the weight of two mid-size sedans. The Hummer’s poor fuel economy was also due to the fact that its bulky and rectangular body results in poor aerodynamics.
You might think that a vehicle with the Hummer’s size and power can fit plenty of people, but it only has five seats. When gas prices were low, the Hummer’s size and lavishness served as a status symbol. However, when gas prices surged during the 2000s, people’s interest in Hummers plummeted. The brand released their final production model in 2010.
General Motors (GM) announced that they were going to revive the company in 2020, announcing the release of a new generation of all-electric models. As of September 2022, GM has built 2,570 units of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup. The Hummer EV SUV will be released sometime in early 2023.
