I don't know specifically about your Olds, but in most vehicles, the oil and gen lamps come on when the key is first turned on as a lamp check. As long as they go off after you start the vehicle, you should be fine. If you are uncertain about your alternator, most auto parts chain stores have someone that will put a meter on it to measure the output at no cost to you. Hope this answers your question.
