Air Duct Hose Guides

Air Duct Hose: Solving Your Air Intake Issues

The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) of your vehicle is made possible by your air duct hose. This pulls air from its location at the front of the vehicle, runs air through the air cleaner assembly for proper filtration, and directs the cleaned air to the air distribution box or intake of the engine. The problem is that this hose has a restrictive working pressure based on the weakest pressure rating of its comprising part. Say your air duct hose is rated with 7,500 psi and its quick-coupler fitting with 4,200 psi; the assembly's pressure rating is just 4,200 psi. If you expose it to a rating that's over and beyond its limits, it can become blown and irregular for its functions. If thinking of a replacement or upgrade, choose the perfect product using these factors:

Materials

  1. Elastomers are known for their superb abrasion resistance and flexibility. If you need low pressure air duct hose, they are inexpensive choice for you. choice.
  2. Fluoropolymers are characterized by excellent chemical, high temperature, and corrosion resistance. Air duct hoses made from these materials are expected to have better service life, so you are actually saving a great deal if you choose them.
  3. Thermoplastic materials offer great kink resistance and tight minimum bend radii, so they will make very good hoses for your air intake process. Choose this type if those characteristics are what you want for your hoses.
  4. Metal air duct hoses feature very high resistance against temperature and pressure, but they are typically stiff and heavy. You don't need another pound or more of load in your vehicle, so these are not always recommended.

Dimension

  1. Inner diameter (ID) affects the air's flow rate. Getting oversized ID results in sluggish performance, while opting for undersized ID causes pressure drops and damage. Make sure that the ID is perfect for your standard setting.
  2. Outer diameter (OD) is vital in choosing the perfect hose for your factory fittings. Make sure you check the specifics of all your mounting hardware and compare them with the new hose to ensure they fit.
  3. Length of your factory air duct hose should be checked before getting a replacement because the longer your replacement is, the higher the chance of pressure drop in the system. Choose one that fits the original length of your old part to effectively restore the performance of your hose and, thus, the entire air intake system.

8 Steps to Air Duct Hose Replacement

An air duct hose gets clogged and needs cleaning from time to time in order to work well again. But what happens when this duct hose becomes leaky? The engine will show significant loss in power, because it will run in a fuel-rich format and create lean condition. Its fuel efficiency will also start declining, and you surely won't like the added fuel cost. Worst of all are the detonations within the powerhouse, warning of a highly probable internal damage. At this point, there's no other choice but to fix the problem by installing new air duct hose.

Difficulty level: Moderate

What you'll need:

  • Jacks
  • Jack stands
  • Wrenches

Step 1: Properly and securely raise the front part of your car with jacks and jack stands. If you could work in an area that has quality ramps, bring your vehicle to such a place for safety purposes.

Step 2: Make sure that your engine as well as the other heat-generating under-the-hood components are completely cooled before touching anything. Pop the hood open already to help dissipate heat.

Step 3: When the engine has completely cooled down, reach for the car battery in order to disconnect the engine from the electrical source. Unplug first the negative terminal which you would most probably find as black. After which, unplug the red one or the positive terminal.

Step 4: The next thing to do is to remove the stock air intake. To do this, you have to take out the air filter along with the plastic box that houses it. You also have to remove the hose that connects the box and the engine. They are attached by hose clamps and round metal rings that need to be loosened. If there are any air sensors, carefully remove them as well.

Step 5: Check the new air duct hose to make sure you purchased the one you want for your engine. See if the inner diameter is not too big to cause the engine to run sluggish and not too narrow to make way for pressure to drop. Also double check the outer diameter, ensuring that it is compatible with your vehicle's mounting hardware. And of course, check if its length matches the original part so as to make sure that the engine would perform the way that it does before.

Step 6: Securely attach the new air duct hose with hose clamps. Cool air ducts would need you to climb under the car to install. Hot air ducts may require the same thing, but location largely depends on the make of your vehicle.

Step 7: If the air sensors that you took off earlier are still fine, have them installed already. But replace as necessary. Be very careful in handling such a sensitive car part. After that, also install a new air filter, and secure it with a hose clamp.

Step 8: It's time to check the new air intake for play. Make sure to tighten the mountings securely to prevent it from striking any objects in the engine bay. Then reconnect the engine by plugging the terminals in reverse order.
