Mitsubishi announced the new Outlander for the 2022 model year will officially launch in February. The model will sit in between the compact crossover and mid-size SUV segments and will feature a new bold design.

Prior to the announcement, photos of the updated Outlander were leaked on Instagram and a prototype was also spotted last year. Recently, Mitsubishi has finally shared the first official teaser image of the vehicle’s next generation.

Notably seen on the image is the styling from the Engelberg Touring concept. Although the fascia looks similar to the current version of the Outlander, it also comes with lots of chrome that gives it a more modern appearance. It’s the same for the rear end of the vehicle, which also shows thinner taillights.

The upcoming Outlander is rumored to be sharing a platform with the 2021 Nissan Rogue and will include a sharp redesign. When it debuts, the model will go up against strong sellers in the segment such as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

What makes the Outlander unique, though, is that like the Volkswagen Tiguan, it features a third row of seats, which is uncommon for other models in the segment. This third row comes as standard equipment for the Outlander, while Volkswagen offers it as an option on Tiguan units with an all-wheel-drive and standard on front-wheel-drive models.

On top of sharing a platform with the Nissan Rogue, the Outlander is also expected to be powered by the same 2.5-liter inline-four engine that delivers 181 horsepower. It will likely be paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission and front-wheel-drive as standard. An all-wheel-drive could be optional, as well as a PHEV variant.

According to Mitsubishi, the upcoming Outlander will be the “best equipped” car it has ever sold in the United States, complete with new technology and an improved interior. Better materials are expected to find their way on the model, as well as a larger and more responsive touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability.

Following its February unveiling, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander will go on sale at dealerships across the US sometime in spring 2021.
