The past year is forgettable for most automakers, except perhaps for a few ones that managed to achieve huge gains by the end of 2020. One such company is Toyota. Not only was it able to snatch the title of best-selling car brand from Volkswagen after five years, it was also recognized as “the most-searched” car manufacturer for 2020.

In a study conducted by Compare the Market, the Japanese marque was revealed to have dominated search terms on Google last year. Before Toyota, the recognition was given to BMW in 2019.

The analysis includes search results data from 158 countries in the years 2018, 219, and 2020, with the total search volume for car brands in 2020 being around 88 million.

BMW, who previously held the top position, experienced a drastic decline. From being the most-searched car brand in 118 countries in 2019, it took first place in only 34 countries in 2020. However, it retained its position as the most-searched car brand during the three-year period, claiming 38.3% of all top searches from 2018 to 2020 compared to Toyota’s 31.3%

Mercedes-Benz maintained its position as the third most-searched automaker in 158 countries, while Kia and Ford improved their rankings to place 4th and 5th, respectively. Both Kia and Ford were in the last place in 2019, appearing only at the top spot in one country.
