Toyota just announced that it is recalling more than 900,000 vehicles for another batch of airbag replacements. This follows previous recalls involving the controversial Takata airbags that has hounded the Japanese automaker for several years.

A total of 928,000 vehicles under the Toyota, Scion, and Lexus brands are affected by the recall due to their high-risk airbags. The company will be replacing the units with new Takata airbags as a temporary solution until the “final remedy” airbags become available.

According to Toyota, this is the final phase of the Takata airbag debacle, which the company is conducting ahead of the schedule set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The problem stems from Takata airbags that were discovered to have the possibility of propelling sharp metal fragments upon deployment, putting drivers and other occupants at risk of serious injury or death.

Dealers are instructed to replace the front passenger or driver airbag inflator and/or airbag assembly accordingly depending on the vehicle model.

Owners of the vehicles involved in the recall can expect to receive notifications from Toyota starting mid-December.
