I'm trying to restore a Chevrolet Fleetmaster. I want to take the body off of the frame to paint it, but first I want to know how many bolts are there to hold the body onto the frame. Also, what's the easiest way to take off the body?
The Chevrolet Fleetmaster should have 22 bolts in total, with 11 on each side. To remove the body, first reinforce your garage rafters as you will have to use it as support for chains that will pull up the body. Use two engine chains—one on the front of your car and another on the rear. Connect the front chain to the body mount, and the rear chain to the shock absorber bolt holes using a 90-degree metal bracket. Once the chains are secured to the body, pull them to lift the component. When the body is suspended, support it using a combination of 6 x 6 timbers and cinder blocks, but keep the chains hooked.
The dashboard lights of my Chevrolet Fleetmaster didn't switch on during my last drive. How do I find out the problem?
This is a pretty common problem with old rheostats on the Chevrolet Fleetmaster. Try to feel for a fine wire coming from the rheostat. If it's broken at either end, then that's what caused the dashboard lights to go out. You don't have to replace the entire switch to fix this; you can short the rheostat so that the dashboard lights will be on full brightness all the time. The bad news is you won't be able to switch this off anymore. If you don't like this option, simply replace the light switch and have another fuse added to protect the dashboard lights from shorting.
I noticed that I need to strong arm the shifter of my Chevrolet Fleetmaster in order to make it switch gears. I used to be able to shift the stick with just two fingers. Why is this happening and is it possible to repair?
The Chevrolet Fleetmaster usually has the vacuum shift, so it's possible that the diaphragm or module has gone bad. The reason why you have a hard time shifting is that the shifter doesn't have any vacuum pressure anymore. You will need to replace the rubber hose that goes into the vacuum cylinder, then lube the vacuum cylinder inside and carefully adjust the linkage.
How many quarts of oil can the Chevrolet Fleetmaster hold, and what happens if its level is below the "Full" mark?
The Chevrolet Fleetmaster can hold 5 quarts of oil. Because this liquid is essential for your engine to function, not having enough of it or having dirty oil will result in extreme engine wear, which will eventually cause the engine to fail. The engine oil serves as the lubricant that helps fast moving parts slide against each other smoothly instead of grinding each other down. Without the oil, these components will grind then cause the engine to seize and stall your vehicle. This will then lead to expensive repairs or maybe even a more expensive engine replacement.
