FAQs—Chevrolet Special Deluxe
The old engine of my Chevrolet Special Deluxe won't start. What are the possible reasons for that?
Old cars with old engines usually deal with startup problems. Several reasons may cause this issue. For instance, if the engine does not crank even if you hear it click whenever you try starting it, the battery could be the problem. Most of the time, the battery has low charge or has already been discharged. However, for classic cars such as your Chevrolet Special Deluxe, the battery terminals and the clamp connections could be the culprit basically because of corrosion that builds up as the car ages. If you have been diligent in cleaning your battery, the cause could just be as simple as loose cables.
To make sure you won't have future startup problem, check the starter motor relay and the ignition switch for any damage. Faulty ignition happens when the engine won't start, even if it cranks. Also inspect the fuel pump and the fuel filter. A defective fuel pump won't be able to supply enough fuel in the combustion chamber, while a clogged fuel filter will hold back fuel from making it into the chamber.
How do I deal with overheating? And, is there any way to prevent my old convertible from suffering from it?
Pop the hood open first, and let heat dissipate before doing anything. After which, you must check the coolant overflow reservoir because your cooling system may have ran out of coolant. A leak may have caused that, or the coolant has gone dirty already. Another reason could be inoperable cooling fan perhaps due to faulty belt. Also check the radiator itself for kinked or broken hose and cracked or worn cap. Clogged air filter may also lead to this problem. Remember, though, that the engine parts can also trigger overheating. If the head is cracked or the head gasket is blown, engine will surely overheat.
Good maintenance habit is the best preventive measure there is. Manufacturers have also equipped their vehicles with indicators for drivers to anticipate and apply the necessary measures to avert overheating early on. Be wary of the temperature reading of your gauge. If it didn't do its job, have your faulty thermostat fixed. Be alerted when the indicator lights-up, if your car has it. If it doesn't have one, installing it would really help.
How badly would my Chevrolet Special Deluxe fare if its engine gets insufficient lubrication?
Insufficient lubrication or the lack of it can lead to engine failure. The engine is comprised of many moving parts that rely on lubrication in order to perform their best. Not enough engine oil will allow friction to get in the way. Running your engine in this condition can lead to overheating since friction creates additional heat to the already high temperature inside the engine. More than that, lubrication prevents abrasion that occurs due to too much friction, and the lack of it will definitely damage the bearings and the crankshaft. Make sure you drive with enough engine oil, and make sure that the gasket and seals don't allow the lubricant to leak.
