How to Choose a Cold Start Valve
One of the benefits of having a fuel-injected system is that it is far more efficient than an old-style carbureted engine. The downside is that, if you live in areas of colder climates, it's a bit more difficult to start your car. That is what your fifth injector is for; it sends richer fuel-air mixture to your engine to warm it up a lot faster. Technically dubbed as the cold start valve (CSV), it basically works just like your fuel injector, but with a longer injection time intervals-seconds rather than milliseconds. If you are having a hard time starting your engine on a chilly day, this valve could be damaged. You will find a lot of replacements for it in the market. Things to check before getting your replacement are:
Your cold start valve is mounted in the air intake distribution box and is in line with the fuel rail, so it will have one terminal for injection purposes. But, performance designs are now becoming popular, offering better performance. These designs offer two terminals.
- 1 terminal. If your vehicle is equipped with a factory cold start valve having only one terminal, this should be your pick. But, you can always upgrade if you want better performance from your fuel injection system.
- 2 terminals. If you are all about performance, this should be the best choice for you. Just remember that bigger tasks require better materials and technology, so make sure you get it from a trusted manufacturer like Beck Arnley and Standard.
There are many types of cold start valves in the market today, and they basically differ in designs of the blade and thickness of the housing. The most common is the mini-blade because of its weightless and slim construction. If you are looking for the perfect replacement for your old part, this will be a good choice.
- OE part. Nothing comes close to the fit, construction, and design of your factory cold start valve than the original equipment part. This is made by your make or its supplier. One thing that you will find unfavorable with this part is the price, but choose it if price tag is not a concern for you.
- Direct-fit replacement. This is always the second and the cheaper choice. Designed to perfectly match the specifications of your vehicle, direct-fit products are also a good pick. In fact, there are some aftermarkets that are better than OE parts because of their innovative designs and features.
4-Step DIY Installation of a Cold Start Valve
Whenever running on a cold engine, your cold start valve (CSV) injects richer fuel into your engine to achieve its operating temperature a lot faster. It works pretty much like the fuel injector, but it differs in injection time with seconds of interval rather than milliseconds. With that heavy-duty function, you can expect it to wear out over time. When that happens, a replacement will be necessary. But, you can opt to do the replacement on your own if you want to. Here is an easy step-by-step guide for you:

Things you'll need:
- Screw drivers
- Allen wrenches
- Nylon rope(tied at the ends of your Allen wrench)
- Rug and cleaning agent
Step 1: Remove the CIS intake rubber boot with the correct size of screw driver or Allen wrench. Then, try to reach for the CSV and the Allen bolts that secure it in place. If you can, you can proceed to remove these bolts. NOTE: This is where you need the nylon rope attached to your Allen wrench. It will serve as extension handle in case you drop your wrench in your engine compartment. If you can't, you need to do an ?engine drop' or removal of the engine as an assembly.
Step 2: Take the constant start valve off and clean the area where it was. NOTE: You can only do the latter if you did an engine drop.
Step 3: Install the new CSV in place of your old part and secure it with the factory mounting bolts.
Step 4: Reinstall the intake CIS intake rubber boot and make sure that you exert just enough torque on it. NOTE: Overtightening these bolts will only cause stress on the bolts or the flanges where they are installed, causing early damage on them.
