Divert the Old Diverter Valve

The diverter valve on your car is designed to release air pressure in the intake when the throttle is not in use. In time, vehicles can also suffer from a leaking valve and this can reduce the turbo boost pressure and power. But don't panic when this happens because we have come up with a guide to help you. Here's a step-by-step process on how to divert the old diverter valve on your Volkswagen 1.8T into a new one.

Tools required:

  • Pliers
  • Medium flathead screwdriver
  • Socket set and ratchet (some models)
  • Tin snips (optional)
  • Replacement diverter valve

Safety tip: Remember to wear gloves to protect your hands and closed toe shoes to avoid injury.

Step 1: Lift the hood and remove the plastic engine cover by turning the fasteners 90 degrees so that they can pop up.

Step 2: Remove the cover from the engine and place it aside. On the latest Volkswagen Beetles, the cover is removed by taking out two trim caps over two 10mm bolts. Using a socket, remove the bolts and slide the cover forward and up.

Step 3: Take out the turbo boost hose from the diverter valve. These will be guarded by hose clamps, the style of which actually depends on your car model. With pliers, you can simply squeeze the clamps and slide them off the hose on some vehicles. However, others may need you to use a crimp clamp that has to be pried open with a screwdriver.

Step 4: Cut the clamp using tin snips.

Step 5: Take out the vacuum hose that ties the top portion of the diverter valve. Get the hose with your hands and pull it off by wriggling it back and forth.

Step 5: Using a flathead screwdriver, loosen the clamp at the bottom of the valve. If there's a crimp clamp, repeat the process on the second step. Remove the diverter valve.

Step 6: Mount the new diverter valve and tighten the clamp at the base with a screwdriver. If the clamp is crimp-style, repair it with a regular screw clamp.

Step 7: Reinstall the vacuum line on the top of the diverter valve by sliding it on and making sure that it is tightly placed. Put the boost hose back. Use the old clamp or you can mount on a new screw clamp if the old one is damaged. Reinstall the engine cover and you're done!
