Toyota Exhaust Manifold Articles

Can you imagine how a country that fell into the hands of furry stood up from dust and now leads the world when it comes to technological advances? It is unbelievable indeed, but Japan made it there, just where it now lies. A proof of its success is the achievement that Toyota has reached. After sixty years of weaving innovations in automotive machinery, Toyota Motor Co. Ltd has grown as the world's third largest automotive manufacturer and the Japanese chief in vehicle production. Every six seconds it produces one car or more than 4.5 million yearly. As you stroll or drive along urban places you'll find Toyotas rolling their wheels in almost every block. Packed with advance technology and improved designs, they gracefully show the world what really is there about a Toyota.

The engineers of Toyota see to it that every detail of the products they create is of premium quality. This is evident in the attributes of Toyota exhaust manifolds. As you would know exhaust manifold doesn't ultimately affect the performance of the machine, but its importance to the whole operation cannot be devalued, thus are as well made to provide quality just as how other Toyota performance do. They are machined through the efficiency of Toyota's latest technology and run through careful and efficient quality checking.

An exhaust manifold is engineered to collect the exhaust gas that the engine has created during the process and direct them to the exhaust ports for disposal. It completes its job by the help of other parts of the exhaust system, the exhaust pipe and seal, catalytic converter, muffler resonator, tail pipe, as well as heat shields. They come in several kinds, and applicable only according to the type of engine that it's supposed to serve. An in-line type of engine requires a single manifold, while the V-type needs two.

There are several kinds of exhaust manifolds, all come in either cast or nodular iron. There's the exhaust manifold that's applicable only for normal 4-cylinder in-line engines. Another one is what called as two-into-one manifold, providing easier gas flow. In the modern auto machining, vehicles use the V-type engine. This one's need a manifold that faces the rear bank of cylinders, providing each with passage of their own that connects into a single passage. Also available is the exhaust manifold that can be identified by its long branches that are blended obliquely into the outlet, a design for reduction of back pressure. Then there's the high efficiency inners and outers tow-into-one system exhaust manifolds. The ones usually used for GT and sports cars.

Toyota Exhaust Manifold

Summary

  • Most Toyota V-shaped engines have two exhaust manifolds. Toyotas with inline engines usually rely on a single manifold.
  • Cast iron exhaust manifolds cost less and last longer. Tubular steel exhaust manifolds deliver better flow performance and increase engine power.
  • Symptoms of a cracked Toyota exhaust manifold include visible damage, loud noises from the manifold, poor fuel efficiency and reduced engine performance, and a burning smell.
  • On CarParts.com, replacement manifolds cost anywhere between $93 and $417. They come singly, in sets of 2, or as part of a replacement kit.

What is an exhaust manifold?

The exhaust manifold diverts the engine’s exhaust gas out of the cylinder head and into the exhaust pipe. Not only does it help make room in the combustion chamber for fresh air and fuel, but it also keeps the dangerous fumes from entering the cabin.

How many exhaust manifolds does your Toyota’s engine have?

Toyota produces both inline engines and V-shaped engines. Depending on its engine type, your Toyota vehicle model can have one or two exhaust manifolds.

Most V-shaped engines have two banks of cylinders, Bank 1 and Bank 2. Each bank gets a manifold. In comparison, the typical inline engine makes do with a single exhaust manifold.

Types of exhaust manifolds

Exhaust manifolds fall into one of two groups according to their construction and the materials used to make them. They perform the same roles but have different requirements.

Cast iron exhaust manifolds

Made of cast iron, these exhaust manifolds come standard on most cars and trucks fresh out of the factory. They cost little to produce, easily fit into cramped spaces, and enjoy long service lifespans.

Cast iron exhaust manifolds have drawbacks. They prioritize low cost and compact size over engine performance, so many performance-minded drivers replace them with headers to boost horsepower and torque.

Exhaust manifolds made from cast iron also weigh a lot for their size. Over time, and as they cycle through heating and cooling phases, they will develop cracks.

Symptoms of a cracked exhaust manifold include loud noises while running and illuminated Check Engine Light.

Tubular steel exhaust manifolds

Steel manifolds deliver better flow performance than cast iron manifolds. Many units come with integrated flex pipes that flex when the temperature changes. The flexible piping reduces the stress caused by repeated heating and cooling.

These manifolds use either mild steel or stainless steel. Mild steel parts cost less to produce while stainless steel components last longer and withstand corrosion better.

Welds secure the intersection points of the manifold’s tubing and their connection with the cylinder head flange.

Sports cars, performance-centric vehicles, and Jeeps use tubular steel exhaust manifolds to get the most performance out of their engine.

Like their cast iron counterparts, tubular steel exhaust manifolds will eventually crack, even if they have flex pipes. They display similar symptoms.

Cracks in your Toyota exhaust manifold

Be it from age, heat cycles, or broken hangers, you cannot prevent the eventual appearance of cracks in the exhaust manifold. The damage will reduce the manifold’s ability to collect and channel engine exhaust.

The following symptoms will warn you of any cracks in your Toyota exhaust manifold:

  • Visible cracks in the manifold
  • Exhaust produces very loud noises
  • Vehicle wastes fuel and performs less efficiently
  • Burning smell in the engine bay and the Toyota’s interior

How much does a replacement Toyota exhaust manifold cost?

It’s important to replace a cracked or old Toyota exhaust manifold before returning your vehicle to the road. On CarParts.com, replacement manifolds cost anywhere between $93 and $417. They come singly, in sets of 2, or as part of a replacement kit. Enter the year, make, and model of your vehicle to find a guaranteed fit.
