FAQs—Hyundai Elantra

While driving my Hyundai Elantra, the vehicle suddenly stalled and died. I brought it to the repair center and worked fine after that. However, problem occurred again after a few days. How can I fix this?

Solving an intermittent stalling problem on any vehicle, not just the Hyundai Elantra, can be challenging. This is especially true if the vehicle's computer is not registering any history codes, pending codes or hard codes. You have to keep in mind that an engine needs three things to run smoothly and idle without stalling: correct air/fuel ratio, enough idle speed for the idle load and a good spark. If any of these is missing, the engine may stall.

Intermittent stalling that happen at random are usually ignition-related. This could be because of a sudden loss of spark, which could cause the engine to die cold and prevent it from restarting. Check your ignition for hot shorts/opens in the ignition coils, the ignition modules and crank position sensors. Stalls could also be caused by loose or corroded wiring connectors.

The brake light bulb in my Hyundai Elantra is busted, and I want to replace it on my own. Any tips on how I should go about it?

If you really need to replace the brake light bulb of your Hyundai Elantra, the first thing that you should do is to read your owner's manual. Familiarize yourself with all the parts included in the light assembly so you don't make mistakes. But really, it's easy to replace a brake light bulb—you just need the right tools. You will need a Phillips-head screw driver to remove the lens housing. Then, pull out the entire bulb assembly; make sure to not pull the wiring. The bulb should come off after a quarter turn and then you can put the replacement bulb, turning a quarter at the opposite direction to keep it in place. Screw the lens housing back and you're done.

I love my Hyundai Elantra but I am going nuts about the fact that I had to replace my front tires with just 5,000 miles on them. What is causing this premature tire wear?

Not all tires are created equal just as vehicles and people's driving habits are different from each other. If you're Hyundai Elantra is using high performance tires, they usually wear quickly than touring tires on a family sedan. There are several factors than can cause premature tire wear and the two most common causes are improper inflation pressure and out-of-spec alignment conditions.

Always check the pressure in all of your tires every month as well as when you're planning to go on a long trip. Check the manufacturer's tire pressure specifications or your owner's manual for recommendations. Proper alignment will save you the headache of irregular tire tread wear.

There is water leaking in the passenger side of my Hyundai Elantra. How do I fix it?

Water leaks inside a vehicle are not only annoying. These can cause carpet mildews as well as damage electronic components inside. There are two reasons why there would be water leaking in the passenger side of your Hyundai Elantra: one, a flawed sealing system that allows rain inside and two, from a faulty HVAC system. You need to check which of your car's HVAC system is causing the leaks - it could be the evaporator, the core heater, or the heater hoses. Consult a professional mechanic if you are going to replace or repair any of these. Improper replacement could cause further problems and mean more repair dollars for you.

Hyundai Elantra: From Cheap to Affordably Elegant

The Hyundai Elantra was first released as an economical and affordable car. Unfortunately, the budget for this vehicle seemed to be at the very bottom of the barrel, as was evidenced by the shoddy construction of the first generation. In a span of five generations, the Elantra seems to have climbed out of the hole it had dug for itself. Today, the Elantra offers class, reliability, and style for a very affordable price.

1990: First generation

The first Elantra was launched in 1990 and was offered as a Sedan. It sported a Mitsubishi made 1.6 Liter straight-4 engine which was soon upgraded to a 1.8 Liter engine and came with a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission. In 1994, the Elantra was upgraded with ABS brake, airbags, power mirrors and fog lamps. The first Elantra was panned for its awful performance, underpowered engine and terrible handling. Hyundai’s plan for an affordable car unfortunately translated to a very cheap excuse for a car.

1996: Second generation

The next Elantra offered by Hyundai was somewhat an improvement over its embarrassing predecessor though it still remained a car avoided by many. The car was offered as a sedan and a station wagon and engine choices included a 1.5 and 1.8 liter inline-four gasoline engine and a 1.5 liter lean-burn gasoline engine. In 1999, a larger and more powerful 2.0 liter gasoline engine was offered and the car was additionally equipped with airbags.

2000: Third generation

The third iteration of the Elantra offered considerable improvements in build and style over the past two generations. The car was equipped with a 2 liter inline-four gasoline engine and included a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. All Elantras came with power locks, power windows, power steering, airbags, and air-conditioning. In 2003, new headlights and tail lights were added, along with new grilles and bumpers.

2004: Fourth generation

The fourth generation Elantra was another improvement over the old versions. Engines available for the vehicle were a 2.0 liter gasoline inline-four gasoline engine and a 1.6 liter turbodiesel inline-four engine. The car came either with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. The car’s performance was considered to be satisfyingly good and its interior was described as extremely comfortable and roomy. Aside from the base GLS trim, Hyundai offered the luxurious SE trim which included electronic stability control and a telescopic steering wheel along with leather seats and a sunroof. Ipod and USB interfaces were installed in 2009.

2010: Fifth and current generation

The current Elantra comes with a 1.8 liter inline-4 engine along with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. These new engines further increased the fuel economy of the engine while improvements to the car’s design and construction have significantly improved performance and driving comfort. The latest Elantra comes in two trims, the GLS and the limited.
