Pontiac Grandville Guides

Quick and Easy Tips for Your Pontiac Grandville's Transmission

Also called the "Wide Tracker," the Pontiac Grandville was a lush and huge sedan when it was launched in the market. Following the design vein of its predecessor, the Pontiac Bonneville, the Grandville followed GM's "B" platform and shared the same luxurious interior and longer wheelbase. Its chrome exterior trimmings and wrapped parking lights differentiated the two sedans. Rear fender skirts were also added to give it a more classy appearance. The Grandville's Hydra-Matic transmission system is one of the notable technologies included in this sedan. It was an efficient and robust transmission, which made Pontiac a top contender in the full-sized sedan market. If you happen to own this well-built automobile, here are some quick and easy tips for its transmission system.

  • Keep its transmission parts cool.

GM's engineers designed and built your sedan's transmission to last. However, overheating is the main reason why most transmission parts fail. Some of the common causes of overheating are driving through stop-and-go traffic, the weather (especially during hot summer months), loading your car beyond its capacity, and engine problems. These could cause the transmission lose its lubrication and overheat. When metal parts grind against each other, their deposits and shavings could permanently damage vital moving parts. Grinding would also cause these parts to melt and stick together. Keeping these parts cool is necessary and frequent inspection is the key to its longevity. Check the transmission fluid's level and replenish it if it falls below the recommended level. Change the fluid if it turns murky or dark brown. Proper lubrication will prevent its parts from breaking down prematurely.

  • Check your sedan's engine and cooling system.

Your transmission works together with your vehicle's engine and cooling system. As mentioned earlier, engine problems such as overheating could also affect the transmission system's performance. Since the cooling system is also responsible for keeping your engine cool, it also needs to function properly. Fluids are the lifeblood of these systems and their levels need to be checked regularly. Start by inspecting the engine's oil level and color. Make sure its oil is within the recommended level and its color should be amber or clear. Similar to the transmission's fluid, if the engine oil becomes too murky or black, change the oil immediately. The same maintenance procedure applies to the cooling system. Check the radiator for leaks or cracks. This would cause the antifreeze to leak and cause overheating. Inspect all its rubber hoses and fittings to ensure the coolant is distributed throughout the engine. Keep the engine and the cooling system free from leaks to ensure they're cooling properly.

  • Bad driving habits could affect the transmission system's performance.

Bad drivers ruin cars, even the well-built ones such as your sedan. Your car's Hydra-Matic transmission has more moving parts compared to a standard manual transmission. Shifting the gear from Drive to Reverse while the car is moving, could wear-out and damage its mechanism. The general rule when driving an automatic transmission is to stop your car before shifting gears. This will help the gears shift properly before stepping on the gas pedal. When putting the gear to Park, step on the brake pedal and lift the emergency brake to make sure your car won't move. Be a better driver by remembering this important tip.

Your Pontiac Grandville is a classic car and it deserves to be treated well. Take note of these easy tips to let the next generation enjoy driving it.
