Ported Vacuum Switch Guides

Trouble-Free Steps to Follow When Replacing the Ported Vacuum Switch

The ported vacuum switch is an essential part of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, which basically triggers its operation depending on the temperature of the coolant. In a way, this component is considered responsible for lowering the toxic emissions from your car. It also helps improve the engine performance by ensuring that the coolant temperature is maintained at an allowable level. Once the ported vacuum switch gets damaged, you should expect your vehicle's performance level to drastically drop. Replace it once it breaks down to avoid bigger problems from occurring. Here's how you can change it on your own:

Difficulty level: Moderate

What you'll need:

  • Socket set
  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Rag
  • New ported vacuum switch
  • Owner's manual

Step 1: Turn off the engine of your car and let it rest for a few minutes before you start the replacement procedure. This keeps you safe from accidents brought by the hot coolant from the cooling system.

Step 2: With a rag, open the expansion tank to relieve some of the pressure from the cooling system. Be careful not to get the coolant onto your skin.

Step 3: Carefully remove the vacuum lines that are attached to the assembly where the ported vacuum switch is located. You may also need to disconnect several hoses in order to remove the switch easily. This is a good time for you to check if these components are all in good condition. If you find a faulty one, make sure to replace them as well.

Step 4: Using a screwdriver, unfasten the screws that are holding the ported vacuum switch assembly onto your car. Make sure that you don't misplace the fasteners because you'll be using them again later.

Step 5: Pull the old and damaged ported vacuum switch out from your car and discard it.

Step 6: Set the replacement ported vacuum switch over its mounting location. Secure it using screws that you removed prior to this procedure.

Step 7: Reattach the vacuum lines and water hoses to the assembly of the ported vacuum switch. Make sure that you connect them properly to avoid the coolant from leaking out of the system.

Step 8: Fill up the cooling system with fresh coolant. Use the right mixture of water and coolant to ensure that you get optimum performance from the engine.

Step 9: Test if the new ported vacuum switch is working. Let your vehicle run for a few minutes, you shouldn't experience any stalling or hard starting if the new switch is in good condition.

This whole replacement procedure should take an expert mechanic just around one hour to finish. For beginners that have no comprehensive knowledge about automotive components, this task may take up to two hours to get done. If you're having a hard time locating a particular part or understanding how a component should be removed and reinstalled, you can always consult your owner's manual to get helpful instructions that are specific to your car's make and model. Keep in mind that safety should be your number one concern, so practice proper safety precautions!
