Puller Set Guides

Puller Set: Options and Features

Save yourself a trip to the auto shop. Some repairs and maintenance can be done as a DIY. All you need is the right set of instructions and tools. In repairing and maintaining different auto parts and systems, you'll need to get a puller. This will definitely come handy as you tinker with your vehicle. The puller will let you get the job done safely. You might as well get a set and add this to your repair and maintenance paraphernalia. Here's a quick guide to your options:

Compact/large dent puller - When looking for a good dent puller, you have to choose between the compact and large type. Compact dent pullers are easier to handle considering the smaller size of the slide hammer. A compact dent puller may come with a 15 oz. slide hammer compared to the 34 oz. slide hammer of the large dent puller. They typically come with several screw tips. The one-piece shaft design ensures greater strength.

Steering wheel plate puller - For this type of puller, you have to check the adapters. This puller is used on the steering wheel lock plate, which is usually found on vehicles with tilt and telescoping columns. The puller is used to remove the plate safely, preventing damage caused by excessive force or pressure.

Rear axle bearing puller - This puller is used for removing semi-floating rear axle bearings. The tool seizes the bearing firmly and extracts it without causing damage. The set usually comes with small, medium, and large rear axle bearing pullers. If you're purchasing this set, take note of the minimum and maximum bearing tube inside diameter that each puller can handle or fit into. This puller set is designed for a specific application, for a particular make or model of a vehicle.

Timing gear puller - This tool is used for safely extracting the timing gear. This can also be used for pulling other gears with tapped holes. The timing gear puller comes with bolts. The best ones feature a drop-forged yoke. The plating ensures high corrosion resistance. It will also be great to have a center screw that's heat treated to ensure durability and reliability.

Tie rod puller - Removing a tie rod stud can be tricky, and you need to have a specially designed puller to extract it without breaking anything. A tie rod puller usually comes with a center tip. The tie rod puller can be specially designed for a specific vehicle, usually FWD vehicles with rack and pinion steering.

Hand-power puller - Hand-power pullers come in different capacities, which can range from 2 ton- to 4 ton-pull capacity or 1-ton to 2-ton lifting capacity. Another thing you need to check is the length of the cable, which can be 6 ft. or 12 ft. depending on the design and application. This should come with safety hooks that are built for strength and should have a neat feature for automatic release to guarantee safety.

Power steering pump and alternator puller - This is used to remove P/S pump and alternator pulleys. This is designed for specific applications. Take note of the hub sizes to find the right tool for the vehicle. This may be used along with a pulley installer.
