Selecting a Car Seat Frame

Since you spend the entire time sitting while you drive, your car seats should ensure you of the most comfortable driving experience. What better way to make sure your seats are as durable and comfortable as can be than selecting the seat's very own frame? Here is a guide to the many different factors to consider when selecting the perfect car seat frame.

What are the materials used in making a car seat frame?

Different types of metal are used to create the frames for car seats. Five of the most popular ones include stainless steel, carbon steel, hot-rolled steel, copper, and iron. Most of the time, these metals are used together to form the frames.

  • Stainless steel: This material offers anti-corrosion features. It also resists staining and oxidation. It has excellent formability, making it the top choice for making car frames. It is high in strength and low in weight. Stainless steel differs from carbon steel by the amount of chromium present.
  • Carbon steel: It rusts more easily than stainless steel when exposed to air and moisture, however, as the carbon content rises, steel has the ability to become harder and stronger through heat treating. The downside is that it becomes less ductile. Higher carbon content also reduces weldability.
  • Hot rolled steel: This has a wider tolerance for amount of included carbon. Also for similar metals, hot rolled is usually less expensive.
  • Copper: This is ductile, and it has a very high thermal and electrical conductivity. Pure copper is soft and malleable. It is used as a conductor of heat and electricity, a building material, and a constituent of various metal alloys.
  • Iron: This material is significantly strengthened and hardened by impurities from the smelting process such as carbon. Steels and low carbon iron alloys with other metals are the most common metals for industrial use due to the abundance of iron.

What are other factors to be considered when selecting a car seat frame?

Aside from knowing what materials are used in creating these frames, it is just as important to read about their manufacturing process and surface treatment. Among the different processes these components have to go through are stamping, metal-plating, bending, welding, and riveting. As for surface treatment, the specific metal used in creating the frames could either be galvanized, copper-plated, chrome-plated, electroplated, and e-coated, to name a few. The thickness and specification of the frames are usually made to fit the client's requirements.

Replacing a Driver's Seat Frame

Seat frames are basically what give your car seats their shape. They're used to give your seats general support using slender pieces of steel joined together to form your seats' skeleton. At times, car frames breakd, and driving becomes quite an ordeal, not to mention the fact that the ride becomes a rather uncomfortable one. Replace damaged seat frames with these easy steps:

Tools that you'll need:

  • Gloves
  • Oil
  • Multipurpose grease

Step 1: Make sure you have space to move around the inside part of your car. Wear gloves to protect your hands, and apply oil to pivot the portions of the side lock. Also apply multipurpose grease to the sliding portions and pivot portions of the seat tacks.

Step 2: Detach the front seat, front seat-back cover, and front seat cushion cover. Move driver's seat in full forward position.

Step 3:Unfasten locknuts, washers, capscrews and washers securing four adjuster brackets to driver's seat bracket and remove adjuster brackets. Set the locknuts aside.

Step 4:Raise the driver's seat frame and remove it from the driver's seat bracket. Unfasten two spring pins from inside retainers securing two rod and bushing assemblies in seat frame and remove two rod and bushing assemblies by moving it out from seat frame.

Step 5:Attach the new seat frame in the reverse order of removal and check for damaged or stress-whitened clips/ Replace them with new ones if necessary. Secure clips into place attach two rod and bushing assemblies into seat frame. Secure them with two inside retainers and spring pins.

Step 6: Now, position driver's seat frame to driver's seat bracket with four adjuster brackets and sixteen washers, capscrews, and locknuts. Tighten capscrews and finally adjust driver's seat for desired position.

Replacing a driver's seat frame would take more or less 30 minutes. It's not really difficult for any DIYer once he gets the hang of it.
