FAQs—Subaru Impreza

While driving, I experienced power loss and my Subaru Impreza suddenly died. The car had a hard time starting and caused misfires and CEL (check engine light). What should I do?

There are various causes on why misfire issues happen. It could be the spark plug, bad injectors or fuel filter, faulty MAF sensor or just poor grounding. Check if you have worn or incorrectly gapped spark plugs. Ignition wires should also be replaced after more than 60,000 miles—usually along with other ignition components. If you think that what's causing the misfires is the fuel filter, try changing it. The fuel injectors can be cleaned using a good cleaner or have a professional mechanic clean them for you.

Faulty MAF sensor can cause incorrect airflow reading which results in misfires. Clean the sensor using non chlorinated brake cleaner. Make sure your battery ground cable is clean and properly connected to the intake manifold.

I was told by our local mechanic that I need to change the cabin air filter of my Subaru Impreza. However, there are conflicting tips I've read online where some say I don't need to change it at all. When should I replace it, if I need to at all?

Cabin air filters are your Subaru Impreza's first line of defense against potentially harmful contaminants from the air. They filter elements before they enter your vehicle's HVAC system. At the same time, this filter cleans the air you breathe inside your car. Filters from newer Impreza models should be replaced every 12,000 miles while older than 2014 models must be replaced every 7,500 miles. When you start noticing restricted air flow inside your vehicle, it's time to get the cabin air filters changed.

What is the best coolant to use for my Subaru Impreza?

The best coolant for your Impreza depends on what your engine manufacturer's recommendations are—so better consult your owner's manual. Buying genuine Subaru coolant is advisable. The Subaru Super Long-life Coolant is recommended for newer Impreza models. This is fully formulated to provide great corrosion protection for engine alloys in the radiators, water pumps and cylinder blocks or heads.

But, if you're going to buy other aftermarket coolant, make sure that it does not contain silicates and phosphates. Silicates are bad news; they act as cleaner but also eat away at water pumps and seals in your cooling system. Phosphates, when mixed with water with high mineral content, forms deposits which can lead to corrosion.

My Subaru Impreza is equipped with Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), but sometimes I can feel it engaging on its own. Was it supposed to do that?

Your ABS should not be engaging on its own. However, this can happen especially when your Subaru Impreza has faulty wheel speed sensor. When the sensor reads 0 MPH incorrectly while you're braking, the system will engage and no fault codes will be stored. If you think your ABS is behaving in a peculiar way, it would be best to road test your vehicle with a technician to confirm your suspicions.

Subaru Impreza: The Impressive Rally Car

Known as the world’s leading rally car, the Subaru Impreza is not only a compact sedan but also a sporty auto for the driver’s need for speed. This rugged sedan may also come in hatchback body types that boast of wide cabin space for a more family-oriented configuration. Today, Subaru continues to leave its imprints of performance-focused and fuel efficient vehicles with the Impreza generation line.

1992-2000: Rallying in the rally stage

First offered in the market as a replacement to the aging Leone, the Subaru Impreza came in coupe, sedan, and wagon body styles. In addition to the new body styles, this 1993 Subaru model is also powered by a 1.6 liter engine. A 2.0 liter engine is available but only for the WRX and STi models in Europe and Japan. Years later, the first generation of the Subaru Impreza received a boost in acceleration, reaching from 0-62 in just 4.7 seconds. With its impressive speed, it became a hit to local racers right away.

Subaru Impreza’s name made a notable impression in the international rally stage by 1997 when the sporty 2.5 RS coupe was introduced. By this time, the all wheel drive configuration became a standard in all US Subaru models. As a result, it paved the way for better road handling, stability, and better braking, which are all crucial in a turbo car like the Impreza.

2000-2007: Sprucing up the Subaru

With a larger body frame, the new millennium meant a new age for the Subaru Impreza. Additionally, Y2K saw the release of another 2.5 RS Impreza trim but in the sedan types. A few years later, this generation received a major redesign. And it was also by this time that the WRX sports sedan was introduced to the US market which featured a 224 horsepower engine.

Even with the second generation’s new design, Subaru Impreza’s sales suffered a decline. To counter the slow sales, the company gave another facelift to the Impreza in response to customer complaints of the bug-eye look. Aside from the renovation, it was also in 2004 that the STi model was made available in the US.

2007-2011: The five-door hatchback

Yet again, the third generation of the Subaru Impreza was under a complete redesign, now featuring a considerably larger sedan model and a new five-door hatchback. It also featured a safety upgrade with the electronic stability control. Besides the safety feature, its suspension was also refurbished to make the Impreza more practical and economic.

By 2009, a 224 horsepower engine coupled with four-speed automatic transmission was introduced in the new turbocharged 2.5GT model. Two years later, the Impreza STi sedan model was resurrected, and it came with a white tail spoiler.

2011-present: Sleeker and sexier

Sporting a sleeker look with and an all-new sheet metal, the 2012 Impreza has a more sophisticated interior look and feel. With its longer wheel base, the seating capacity at the backseat is also increased. Not only that, the latest generation of the Impreza impresses its owners with more fuel efficiency under the hood.
