How to Fix a Torn Leather GMC Tonneau Cover
Your GMC tonneau cover is meant to protect the bed of your pickup truck as well as whatever cargo is in it. Since most covers are made of durable and waterproof materials, you can be assured that anything inside will be protected. However, there are times when incidents will happen and the truck cover will sustain tears and/or other damage. The good news is that it can still be repaired. You can take that leather cover to an upholsterer; but, expect that it will cost you a bit more. Or you can opt for this alternative-sew and repair the tears by yourself. With the right materials, you can restore your truck's tonneau cover. Just follow the simple steps below:
Difficulty level: Moderate
Things you'll need:
- Sinew or waxed thread
- Large sewing needles for leather
- Leather glue
- Leather patch
- Waterproof spray for leather
- Tape measure
Step 1: The first thing that you need to do is assess the damage on your GMC tonneau cover. Get a tape measure and measure the size of the tear that needs to be repaired. The measurements that you will get will tell you how much leather patching you need. Make sure to get a leather patch that matches the color of your tonneau cover.
Step 2: Once you're done taking measurements, it's now time to remove the truck cover from the backside of the truck. Lay the cover in a clean surface. It would be better if you have a worktable but you can always use the ground. Just make sure to clear the area from any sharp objects and debris that can cause further damage to the leather.
Step 3: With your GMC tonneau cover lying flat on a worktable or the ground, trace or mark the leather where you will need to sew. When tracing the markings, remember not to place the stitches too close to the tear. This is very risky as the sinew could cut the leather and create more tears. Trace at least about ½ inch away from the tear. It is fine to use a regular marker as this will be covered by the patching later.
Step 4: It is now time to prepare your leather sewing kit. Thread the sinew into a needle and make sure to put a knot at the end so the thread will stay put. Remember, sinew thread is what you need here because regular thread will easily break up. Besides, sinew thread is meant for leather.
Step 5: Begin sewing the tear. Make sure to slowly guide the needle into the mark that you traced earlier. Use a running stitch as it's more suitable in this repair. After stitching, you can now glue the leather patch on top of the stitches. Apply the glue on the patch and make sure to use an even amount of adhesive; cover the whole patch. Then, apply the patch using firm pressure on all sides. Let it dry.
Step 6: Once the glued patch is dry, you can now apply a waterproof spray. This will ensure that water will not seep through any of the areas that you might have left unsewed or unglued.
Step 7: It is now time to reinstall the tonneau truck bed cover. Make sure to secure the cover on the bed properly.
