Transfer Case Shift Mode Selector Replacement: Quick and Easy Steps to Follow
Your vehicle's transfer case shift mode selector is a component that coordinates the movement of the front and rear axles in accordance with the car's transmission system. It usually comes with high and low options to efficiently control the ratio between the axles. Although this component is usually durably built, it's still not exempted to damage. A malfunctioning transfer case shift mode selector can bring about tons of performance problems. It's imperative that you replace it as soon as you can to get your car performing optimally again. Step 1: Pop up your car's bonnet and disconnect the battery cables.
Step 2: Place the drain pan under the transfer case and then remove the power take-off bolts as well as the front output rear cover bolts. Allow the oil to drain into the pan until no content is left inside the transfer case. The next steps are a series of car parts removal, so make sure you remember the arrangement of the parts that you will take off. It's recommended to have your owner's manual with you to avoid confusion.
Step 3: Remove the front axle driveshaft and shift rods from the transfer case assembly.
Step 4: Disconnect the speedometer gear assembly by unfastening the bolt that's securing it to the tail housing. While you're doing this step, you may also remove the lockout lamp from the housing.
Step 5: After you've successfully removed the speedometer and lockout lamp, you may now take the rear output shaft seal and snap ring off the assembly. If your car is equipped with a rear output dust shield and harmonic balancer, then you should remove those first.
Step 6: Remove the tail housing from where it's mounted. Unfasten the bolts that are securing it first before you pull it out from the vehicle and set it aside.
Step 7: Pry the transfer case open by removing the bolt that are attached to it.
Step 8: After you've successfully split the transfer case, you may now remove the front and rear output, drive chain, and indicator switch from the assembly.
Step 9: Now, take off the shift detent screw, spring, and poppet from the bottom of the transfer case before removing the range lever, washer, and nut.
Step 10: There's only a few components left before you gain unrestricted access to the damaged transfer case shift mode selector of your vehicle. All that's needed to be removed now is the mode and range fork, shift rail, mode ring, and range hub.
Step 11: After you've gotten all the hindering components out of the way, you should now be able to remove the damaged transfer case shift mode selector from the assembly. Be careful not to misplace its O-ring and bushing since you'll need them once you install the new shift mode selector.
Step 12: Put the replacement transfer case shift mode selector in place and reattach all the components that you removed. Make sure you install them properly and securely.
