Most people don’t think about the rubber seals that line their car windows, doors, and rear compartment even if they make good use of it every day. It’s only when rain leaks inside the vehicle cabin or you discover drenched items inside the trunk that people realize how important it is for these seals to be in good shape.

Ford weatherstrip seals may not be as expensive or as complex as other mechanical parts of your vehicle, but they do the important job of keeping the elements out when you close your trunk, doors, and roll up your windows. Here’s what you need to know about replacing these rubber seals.

Who manufactures genuine Ford parts and accessories?

Motorcraft is the official parts manufacturing arm of Ford Motor Co. The brand was originally established in the 1950s, but it was later discontinued  following the acquisition of Autolite. By 1972, the latter split off as a separate entity prompting Ford to relaunch Motorcraft as their primary original equipment and replacement parts brand.

Like many automakers, Ford also relies on a wide network of third-party suppliers for components and systems that they do not manufacture under Motorcraft. They have over fifty original equipment manufacturers (OEM) which include well-known companies such as Denso, Dana, Bosch, and BorgWarner.

What’s the difference between OEM and OE replacement parts?

Are aftermarket Ford weatherstrip seals a good alternative to OEM?

Absolutely! Aftermarket weatherstrip seals are a great option for people who want high-quality replacement parts for a fraction of the cost of OEM. Since your choice is not limited to a single brand, you can comparison shop and find the best deals for rubber seals that will perform the same as OEM. This also means you don’t have to wait days to weeks just to order a part for your vehicle.

Finding the right fit

The cost of Ford weatherstripping will vary depending on your vehicle’s model year. The price may also change depending on whether you purchase a universal weatherstrip or if you get one that’s designed specifically for glass, doors, or tailgates. In general, aftermarket seals will cost you anywhere between $8 to $41.

Ford Weatherstrip Seal: Step-by-Step Guide to Fixing It

Your Ford is able to weather the storm outside and have a dry and comfy cabin because of the doors' weatherstripping. The rubber seals keep water and air from getting through the cabin. This keeps the car interior, including the seats, carpet, trunk, and floorboard, from getting wet. Though weatherstrip seals can do their job well for years, there may come a time when they may also break and fail. When this happens, water may leak inside. Foul air from the outside may also get in. Here are ways to fix the busted Ford weatherstrip seal:

Difficulty level: Easy

Things you'll need:

  • Weatherstripping replacement
  • Adhesive remover
  • Non-flammable spray brake cleaner
  • Spray silicone
  • Masking tape
  • Weatherstrip adhesive

Checking the weatherstrip seal

Step 1: Find out which weatherstripping or seal has broken down. See where the wind noise is coming from as you drive. This is a good indication of the leak source.

Step 2: Check the seals around the door frame. The seals may have already cracked or may have developed a hole due to age or wear.

Step 3:Inspect the rubber. Even if the seals don't have cracks or holes, they may still be worn out. The rubber, over time, may have lost its firmness and pliability. You can confirm this by pinching the rubber to see if it will spring back or if it is squishy. If not, then the rubber is not a good seal anymore.

Step 4:Run water from a hose. If finding the source of leak is quite difficult, doing this will help you trace the leak.

Replacing the worn-out weatherstripping

Step 1:Undo any screw that's holding it in place and peel off the old weatherstripping. Be careful not to ruin the paint or scratch the surrounding trim as the rubber studs are snapped out of the holes where they're inserted. With the seal already gone, use adhesive remover to take off any old adhesive on the frame.

Step 2:Make sure the new weatherstripping fits into the holes and contours of the frame and that it's clean before you install it. To clean it, you may rinse it off. Just be sure to let it dry completely.

Step 3:Apply just the right amount of adhesive to the strip and to the frame's surface. Attach the new weatherstripping into the frame before the adhesive dries. See to it that the rubber studs or other fasteners are aligned with the holes. You have to put back any screw you removed. Check the ends of the weatherstripping and see if the whole thing are glued well.

Preventing weatherstripping damage

Step 1:Peel off the weatherstrip from the door to clean it along with the metal surface using a non-flammable spray brake cleaner. Allow it to dry completely.

Step 2:Apply a bead of weatherstrip adhesive onto the weatherstrip and the door. You have to let it dry fill before applying another coat to both surfaces. After this, you can now press the strip into place. Use the brake cleaner to clean up any residue or mess.

Step 3:Use masking tape to hold the weatherstrip in place until the adhesive dries. This will take about 1 and ½ hours.

Step 4:Spray some silicone on the weatherstrip on the doors and trunk kind after you removed the tape. The silicone spray will keep them from freezing up during winter or the cold months and will prevent weatherstripping damage.
