Wheel Seal Guides

Simple Step-by-Step Guide for Replacing a Damaged Wheel Seal

A wheel seal lasts thousands of miles before succumbing to the effects of everyday wear and tear. Since this component directly affects the way that your vehicle runs, it's not really surprising why a damaged wheel seal may cause big headaches and fatal accidents. So, once yours has reached the end of its service life, make sure that you get a replacement as soon as you can. Thankfully, you can replace it at the comfort of your own garage, without the help of a professional. Simply follow the steps below and get the required tools at hand.

Difficulty level: Difficult

What you'll need:

  • Wrench
  • Socket set
  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Cleaning solvent
  • Sealant
  • Lubricant
  • Clean cloth

Step 1: Raise your vehicle up using a jack and use the jack stands to support it. Doing this gives you better access to the wheel mechanisms of your car. Make sure that you're on a flat level surface to keep the car from getting out of balance while it's lifted up.

Step 2: Remove the wheel cover or hub cap by taking off the wheel's lug nuts first. You can use a wrench for this procedure. Put all the lug nuts in one place to keep them from getting lost. When it comes to removing and installing automotive components, it's important that you keep your tools organized to make the procedure easier and hassle-free.

Step 3: If you're vehicle is equipped with a disc brake, you may need to remove the brake caliper mounting bolts as well.

Step 4: Take off other components that are in the way of the rotor or drum assembly. This includes the dust cover and cotter pin. Do this carefully to keep the components from getting damaged. Keep in mind that you're working with sensitive automotive parts.

Step 5: After successfully gaining unobstructed access to the rotor or drum assembly, loosen its adjusting nut first before tugging on it until the washer and outer wheel bearing comes loose.

Step 6: Carefully take the adjusting nut, washer, and outer wheel bearing off the assembly

Step 7: Remove the drum or rotor assembly off the spindle and place it on the floor.

Step 8: Carefully tap on the old wheel seal until it gets dislodged from where it's located. Never force out the seal using a chisel to avoid marring the surface around it.

Step 9: Inspect the hub, bearings, and other fasteners to ensure that they are in good condition. You should also thoroughly clean them with solvent and dry them up using a clean cloth.

Step 10: Put the new wheel seal in place. Make sure that you position it properly over the bearing. Before completely securing the new wheel seal, apply ample amount of lubricant on the bearing's surface.

Step 11: Hammer the seal into place until it's properly positioned.

Step 12: Reattach the components that you removed. Make sure that you tighten up the bolts and nuts properly and take care not to contaminate any wheel parts.

This entire procedure takes around one and a half hour to finish for a skilled mechanic.
