Wrench Guides

Which Wrench Works

Aside from a trusty Phillips screwdriver and a sturdy hammer, a set of wrenches is a must-have in every DIYer's tool box. Aside from being a handy tool when dealing with bolts and nuts, its durability can withstand years of use. High-quality and durable wrenches are mostly made from chromium-vanadium alloy, making them easy to clean and resistant from corrosion. If you are looking for the best wrench for all your needs, well, there is no best wrench. But surely, there will be one that fits your needs.

Types of wrenches

There are several types of wrenches that vary depending on its usage. But here are three most commonly used wrenches based on their functionality:

  • Combination wrench. Why buy two separate wrenches when you can have one combination wrench? This type of wrench has one open end and one box end in one-to tighten and loosen nuts and bolts. If you are the minimalist and space-saving DIYer, then this is the perfect wrench for you. It can only be used in one metric standard size of bolt and nut, by the way.
  • Adjustable wrench. If you want a wrench for any size of bolts and nuts, then an adjustable wrench fits your needs. This type of wrench has a moveable lower jaw operated by a small wheel, to adjust based on the size of the bolt and nut you are working on. For car repair DYIers, since the bolts and nuts of cars vary in sizes, one adjustable wrench can handle them all.
  • Torque wrench. For DIYers who mostly spend time repairing water pumps or delicate engines, and require a specific level of tightness, a torque wrench is your best bet. This type of wrench tightens bolts and nuts to a specific torque or foot pounds. This is specially made to prevent over-tightening bolts on water pipes. It comes in two types: 3/8-inch or ?-inch drives.

The wide world of wrenches

If the three types of wrenches above didn't meet your needs, then you have to explore the wide world of wrenches in the World Wide Web. You can also buy your wrench online. Just a tip: buying a wrench set is cheaper than buying per piece. This adds to your Things to Consider before you buy. Once you have the perfect wrench (or wrench set), you can now call yourself an equipped and ever-ready DIYer. You can perform repairs on your car, in your home, and even in your neighbor's. Enjoy the savings as you keep your DIYer hat on.

Five Tips to Maintain your Impact Wrench

If you are a self-confessed DIYer, among the most useful and handy tools are your screwdriver set, wrench set, and jacks. Maintaining your tools in their best state will make them more durable and more useful for your future DIY encounters. Let's take your good ?ol impact wrench for one. Before moisture and debris take it away from you, here's how you can keep it in its best shape for a longer time.

Difficulty level: Easy

Tools that you'll need:

  • Air dryer
  • Lubricating oil
  • Clean cloth

Step 1: Since the compressor keeps your impact wrench functioning, you should always check if it has a proper air supply. You may have it checked in case you notice a problem.

Step 2: Check and remove debris on the impact wrench after use. This will prevent these alien materials to lock up or damage its parts.

Step 3: Inspect your impact wrench for air leaks and adequate piping size. Repair the leaks if you can, or have it checked in an auto shop.

Step 4: Use an air dryer or blower to eliminate moisture and dust from the impact wrench. This way, you can keep your wrench from rusting. You must also keep the water separator dry every day.

Step 5: Lubricate the impact wrench. You may use oil by hand. Put the oil through the air inlet, and turn on the wrench for a minute to circulate the oil. Let it set for 24 hours.

Make it a habit to check your tools, especially the electric ones because they have bigger chances of wearing out. The earlier you detect malfunctions of the tool, the earlier you can look for ways to fix it. Remember to give your tools a break, after use.
