Fixing a Broken A/C Control Knob
How are you supposed to control your A/C temperature with a broken control knob? While a remote would be an easy fix, it just doesn't seem right to leave your A/C control knob broken like that, right? And you don't want to spend a fortune to replace your whole unit. A quick, easy, and cheap solution to your problem can be done in a matter of minutes. Read on and find out how to fix a broken A/C control knob.
Difficulty level: Moderate
Tools that you'll need:
- Torque bits
- Super glue
Step 1: Grab the top of the panel, just above the radio to detach the center panel from your car and pull it outward. With the panel out, you can already start disconnecting the electrical harnesses. Make it a point to do this carefully since the gray levers are fragile. Remove all the knobs, too.
Step 2: Detach the A/C control knob from the HVAC control by flipping the assembly over. After the switch is off, remove the 4 screws holding the HVAC in place. It helps to use a torque bit for this.
Step 3: With the HVAC off and set aside, you will see 4 clips holding it together. Press the clips down and pop the panel open. Remove the little plastic piece.
Step 4:Once the broken piece is out, you will need to take the retainer piece off the fan switch. Liberally apply super glue on the black collar into the barrel.
Step 5: Strengthen the repair from the outside using the super glue and make sure you fill the crack completely. Remember to trim a little bit of the glue off the bottom of the barrel so it doesn't seize once you get it in. This has to be done before the HVAC can be re-installed.
Step 6: Re-assemble the HVAC and re-install it on the center panel, putting the switches and knobs back on. Check the setup to make sure it does not engage the switch properly. If it still does, re-install it into your car. You will hear it click once you're done.
Fixing your A/C control knob instead of buying a new A/C unit will not only save you a couple of hundred bucks, but it also will also save you much time and effort.
