A/C Expansion Valve Guides

Equip Your Car with the Right A/C Expansion Valve

Does your car air-con huff lesser air than you need? Or does it blow too much than you want? If you're experiencing any of the two, then you should check your air-conditioning system right away. These symptoms might lead to a faulty a/c expansion valve. Here are a few items you should consider before you replace your a/c expansion valve.

The two types of a/c expansion valves

A/c expansion valves are also called thermal expansion valves. There are two common types found in the market today, the o-ring type and the block type. Listed below are short descriptions of their functions and some pros and cons.

  • O-ring a/c expansion valve
  • This type of valve has 2 passages; one from the filter drier and the other to the evaporator inlet. An advantage of this type is its ability to determine temperature and pressure. It can also regulate refrigerant flow efficiently. However, it may be prone to corrosion and that will lead to malfunction.

  • A/c expansion block valve
  • Unlike the previous type, the block valve has 4 passages. It has the same connections like the o-ring, but additional exit point to the compressor and an entry point from the evaporator are added. This valve type consists of small parts, and if it's not taken care of properly, these small parts may cause clogging from the inside.

Both types of a/c expansion valves regulate air flow from the refrigerant efficiently. With regards to their lifespan, it is advisable to choose trusted brands because most of them offer 1-year warranty to the part.

Pinning down the perfect type for your car

Now that you have an idea about the two types of an a/c expansion valve, you're a step closer in searching for the right replacement. Here are some tips to make your search more accurate:

  • List down the make, model, and year of your car, so your search will become easier. Key these in when you visit aftermarket websites because they can easily locate the part using these data.
  • You may also compare your current a/c expansion valve to the item description on the website's catalog.

Replace Your A/C Thermal Expansion Valve the Easy Way

It is very difficult to feel no air coming out of the air-con of your car. You could roll the windows down, but the danger of something flying in or the pollution entering your car's interior is another thing you still need to keep in mind. Stop sacrificing and check your a/c thermal expansion valve.

Here is a step-by-step replacement guide to help you easily change the part.

Difficulty level: Moderate

Tools checklist:

  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • New washers
  • New a/c expansion valve

Step 1: Park your car on a clean, level surface and, engage the parking brake.

Step 2: Remove the surge tank using a screw driver, and then place the refrigerant aside.

Step 3: Take apart the dash clip assembly. Locate and remove the suction line then release the liquid line from the assembly.

Step 4: Locate the current a/c expansion valve and remove the liquid line and suction line nuts from it. Remove the valve connection from the evaporator using the screwdriver. You should also dispose the washers along with it.

Step 5: Cover the entire air-conditioning system to avoid any unwanted object that might contaminate the parts.

Step 6: Remove the cover and then fit the new washers in place. Make sure that you do this as fast as possible to prevent contamination.

Step 7: Take the new a/c expansion valve and connect the liquid and suction lines. Seal these by attaching the nuts to their previous location.

Step 8: Return the parts of the dash clip assembly and reinstall it in.

Step 9: Place the refrigerant back in place and return the surge tank.

Some maintenance tips for your car air-con:

  • Check your refrigerant if there is already a leak. Make sure that it is always on the right level.
  • Turn on the air-con in high cool for 10 minutes, and switch the defrost mode for another 10 minutes to check if it is still working on an optimum level.
