FAQs—Acura TL

I noticed that my Acura TL's brakes make a squeaking sound whenever I lightly step on them. I'm afraid this could compromise my vehicle's braking prowess. Is this something I should worry about?

Any noise associated with the brakes is typically associated with the high-frequency vibration of the brake pads and how they touch base with the rotating brake disc. This is definitely unavoidable since the brake pads generate friction whenever the caliper pushes them against the rotating disc. And although under normal braking conditions the squeaking sound may be a normal occurence, you may want to have your brake pads checked out for wear and tear if the sound is becoming loud enough and bothersome. The accumulation of mud, dust, and road salt could also affect the condition and efficiency of your brake pads. Likewise, prolonged use thins them out, which may also cause the sound.

For a week now, I've been wondering why my headlights are slightly dimming when I stall at a light. What could be causing this?

You don't have to worry as this is normally caused by the variations in the electrical system. Vehicles are equipped with onboard computer that controls the distribution of electrical charges to boost fuel economy and at the same time keep vibrations low. Whenever the engine is idle, the computer keeps the electrical charging system at bay so that it only distributes whatever electricity is needed. With that, a decreased load on the engine means less electrical charges produced.

I want to give my Acura TL a new look and feel. Can I install bigger tires?

Manufacturers technically dissuade owners from makring modifications, especially if that would mean compromising the efficient operation and safety features of the vehicle. For one, Acura cars have been designed in compliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Any changes done on the tires or the suspensions will have a greater chance of affecting its overall proficiency and safety functions.

I'm a bit tied up for the month but my mileage tells me I should have my oils changed soon. Would it be fine if I just get it from the nearest gas station?

The motor oil not only lubricates your vehicle's engine, but also ensures that all moving parts are running properly and are protected from various elements such as road salt, dust, and mud. True enough, there are tons of options when it comes to motor oils and their costs vary. If you are saving, then you might as well be tempted to just get it from the nearby gas station that sells motor oils at affordable prices. However, vehicle manufacturers advise car enthusiasts to only use the specified motor oils to be certain that your engine performance would not ebb.

I think my Acura's side of the windshield is a bit distorted. Should I contact the dealer?

Cross-car distortion is a common characteristic of Acura vehicles that came out since 1994. You don't have to worry though as these minor distortions are approved and allowable for automotive glass use and have met the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

The Acura TL: Four Generations of Success

The Acura TL is a mid-sized luxury Sedan first released by Honda back in 1996. It may not be as exciting or a classy as its counterparts in Europe, but its reliability and value for money have made it a popular vehicle in the United States.

1996: First generation

The Acura TL was first released in 1996 and came in two models, the 2.5 TL equipped with a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine and the 3.2 TL equipped with a 3.2-liter V6 engine. Both came with a four-speed automatic transmission. There was little difference between the two models aside from engine performance. Safety features in the TL included antilock brakes and airbags. Other features of the TL were the automatic climate control, stereo sound system, and power windows and locks.

1999: Second generation

The second generation TL, called the TL 3.2, came with a new 3.2-liter V6 engine that included Honda’s VTEC variable valve timing control. The sedan included a navigation system that had a map of the United States stored in a CD. In 2000, the TL was given a five-speed manual transmission that allowed for better fuel efficiency. Unfortunately, this new transmission had a relatively high failure rate, prompting Honda to extend the transmission warranty to 7 years and 9 months.

2004: Third generation

The third incarnation of the TL was simply called the Acura TL. It came with a 3.2-liter V6 engine and had either a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. The car came with a DVD audio system that was also connected to a hands-free Bluetooth link, allowing drivers to talk on their cellular phones while having both hands on the wheel. The navigation system came with a touch-screen system and responded to voice commands. A new Type-S Acura TL was introduced in 2007. It was equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that provided extra power. The Type-S also featured better performance and handling thanks to an improved suspension and Brembo high-performance brakes.

2009: Current generation

The fourth generation Acura TL is available in two trims: the base TL, which sports a 3.5-liter V6 engine and the SH-AWD, which sports the more powerful 3.7-liter V6 engine. Both trims come with a six-speed automatic transmission, but a six-speed manual is also available for the SH-AWD. Other upgrades to the SH-AWD include 18-inch wheels, enhanced brakes, and improved suspension. Bluetooth links are added, along with USB and iPod connections. The navigation system is a big improvement over past versions with the inclusion of real-time traffic updates and weather updates.
