I got an old two-seater American Motors AMX from my dad as a gift, and this is going to be my first car. I don't really have any experience with automotive work, but I'd like to learn the basics at the very least. I'd like to start off with checking the oil level in my car. I understand a stick is used to do this, but where is it located? And what's the proper way to get an accurate result when checking?

It is advised that you check the oil level in your car engine before you drive to ensure that most, if not all, of the oil is still in the oil pan and not already circulating around the engine (in which case you'll get a lower oil measurement than the actual amount). Another thing to do is to park the vehicle in a flat surface to ensure that the oil is equally distributed in the pan. When looking for the dipstick under the hood, it will most likely be distinguished by the color of its cap (red, yellow, or orange). If you see another cap with pink or red color, that would be for the transmission. When you pull the stick out, you will get an initial reading by looking at the oil marking on the tip. But, this reading will not be very accurate. What you must do is wipe off the end of the stick and reinsert it to get the more accurate measurement.

Which type of brake pads produces the least amount of brake dust? I upgraded my new rims for improved driving appeal, but they are looking a bit grimy because of brake dust. What type of pads would you recommend for my car?

If you are looking for brake pads that produce less dust, you should go for the ceramic type. Aside from the fact that they produce a relatively small amount of dust, the dust they give off is also lighter in color. That's why it's not easily seen on the wheels. Compared to metallic or semi-metallic pads, ceramic brake pads are also quieter and less prone to brake fade. However, you should expect to shell out more when you get ceramic pads as they're a bit more expensive than other types.

There is no air coming from the air vent in my American Motors AMX. What could be causing this problem, and what can I do to determine the source of the issue?

There are various possible reasons behind this problem. Check that the flow control door is in the open position. If it is, check to see if there really is no air coming out or if there is but the flow is simply slow or weak. There are cases when the cabin filter in the vehicle becomes clogged with particulates and causes poor air flow. If this is the reason, you will need to replace the filter. Another possibility is the fan motor getting damaged. This motor operates the fan that blows air out of the vents. If this is damaged, you will need to replace it as well.
