I recently got a vintage American Motors Eagle from a used car shop. It got some detailing work and some engine overhaul. Overall, I think it is a good car. How do I properly maintain it and keep it soaring on the road?

One of the most simple but best ways to keep your American Motors Eagle in top shape is follow maintenance schedule to a T. Regular maintenance mostly consists of having your oil changed regularly (at least once every year or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first), changing the oil filter, having the tires rotated, keeping proper tire pressure, and inspecting the fluids and other vital components. Keep tabs of how the important engine systems are doing. Monitor the condition of the suspension system, the brake system, the cooling system, the transmission system and the power steering system. Inspect the belts, the ignition, and the battery. Also, wash and wax your car from time to time. Grime, dirt and road salts will accumulate if cleaning the car is neglected. Their presence may lead to early damage and rust formation.

I have been experiencing weak gear shifting while driving my American Motors Eagle. Even though I top up the fluid, the transmission fluid is constantly low. I know there must be a leak since I saw a puddle forming underneath the car.

Transmission fluid leakage is usually caused by damage or holes in the pan gasket, lines, seals and the converter. Therefore, have a thorough inspection of these parts and verify their condition. If you want to easily locate the source of the leak, then consider getting a fluid dye. A transmission fluid dye is added to the fluid you can easily locate the exact source of leaking when you look underneath the car. First, top up the reservoir again and add 1 oz. of the dye into the fluid. Start your car and drive and wait for the fluid to start leaking. Return with a UV flashlight to find the leaking underneath. You will easily locate the leak source with this method. If you have spare time and money, it is still best to take the vehicle to the local dealer or technician.

An issue that I have with my American Motors' Eagle is its deteriorating brake quality. It does not brake as well as before. How do I improve my Eagle's braking performance?

Your vehicle is suffering from what is commonly called a "brake fade", or a noticeable decrease in your vehicle's brake capacity. It may sometimes be accompanied by a pulsating sensation in the brake pads or a squealing sound. This may be caused overheating from too much friction, damaged brake pads or insufficient brake fluid. Check your braking habits as they may also be the cause of this problem. Do not brake too harshly and try to get used to letting go off the pedal slowly. When you are starting to notice the problem, park the engine first and allow the brakes to cool down. Perhaps you will experience an improvement afterwards. Inspect the brake fluid levels. Is it still sufficient? Is there any leaking coming from the brake system parts? Check if air, grime or debris has gotten into the brake fuel pump. Bad brake fluid quality may affect the braking performance too. When all else fails, then perhaps it is also time to replace the brake pads.
