BMW 325is Guides

Prep Your BMW 325is for Winter with These Tips

BMW has always been synonymous to automotive excellence. Its 4-cylinder M-series engine and sport-tuned suspension system made its mark on Bimmer enthusiasts. Indulging them with limited-edition sport seats and interior trimmings made the BMW 325is a must-own sedan. Given its robust engineering and durable design, the 325is also needs protection against extreme weather conditions. Start prepping your car for the winter season with these helpful tips.

  • Assemble an Emergency Kit.

You'll never know when an emergency kit may come in handy, especially when driving through heavy snowfall. A basic emergency kit should include a flashlight, jumper cables, snow boots, radio, blankets, and flares. In case you are stuck in a blizzard or snow bank, these items will come in handy. Also, check your spare tire and make sure it has the right pressure.

  • Fill your car with the proper fluids.

Changing weather conditions and your engine's temperature can affect the viscosity of your engine's oil. Use an engine oil with a higher viscosity index during the winter months. It will also protect your sedan's engine against cold starting. Installing an oil pan heater can also help retain the oil's viscosity upon start up. The engine's coolant should also be tested to ensure it won't freeze under extreme cold. Refer to the owner's manual before changing the engine's oil or coolant.

  • Test its electrical and battery system.

Your car's battery and electrical system are highly susceptible to cold weather conditions. The battery's power capacity is affected by the cold weather, and it needs to be checked. Inspect the cables and terminals for any signs of wear or damage. Check for any loose cable connections and corrosion on the battery terminals. Clean the terminals and apply grease to protect them against corrosion. Also, check the manufacture date on the battery to see its age. A three or five-year old battery may need immediate replacement.

  • Keep the sedan's interior and exterior clean.

Most Bimmer owners neglect to protect their car's exterior surfaces against cold weather. Road salt, ice, and snow can affect its paint. The first step in winterizing your car is to wash it thoroughly. Utilize all the fair days before the first snowflakes appear. After washing the car, apply polymer wax to add an extra layer of protection against the elements. The polymer-based wax helps protect the body panels from heavy snow, road salts, and winter grime. Also, don't forget to clean your sedan's interior. Dispose old parking tickets or receipts before vacuuming the interior. Clean the upholstery and put an air-freshener to eliminate the stale car smell. You may also put rubber or vinyl mats to protect the carpet from moisture.

  • Check tire pressure and consider installing snow tires.

Driving through an icy road is both challenging and dangerous. Keeping your car's tires properly inflated is very important. Since the cold weather can decrease the tire's air pressure, tire dealers offer nitrogen gas as an alternative. It helps maintain tire pressure as the gas isn't affected by changes in the temperature. Check the tires' pressure weekly to ensure driving safety. You may also consider installing snow tires or all-season tires. Both tires can help you drive through any icy road condition.

Short commutes with your BMW 325is can be a long one during the winter season. Take your time prepping up your car for the icy roads ahead.
