Canoe/Kayak Rack Guides

A Few Tips to Help You Choose a Car Canoe/Kayak Rack for Your Needs

Have you ever wanted to go kayaking during the weekends, but you can't because there's simply no way for you to carry your canoe or kayak over your vehicle? The answer to your dilemma is quite easy; you just need to get your vehicle a trusty canoe/kayak rack. This handy accessory is used to load your canoe/kayak on your car, making it easier for you to transport it without the risk of getting it damaged. To help you get the best canoe/kayak rack to outfit on your car, check out some of these helpful pieces of advice:

Different canoe/kayak rack types to choose from

There are four common types of canoe/kayak rack offered by different manufacturers today. Read on to find out more about their benefits and drawbacks:

  1. Horizontal rack: A horizontal canoe/kayak rack lets you lay your boat flat over the roof of your vehicle. This provides a sturdier and more stable way to carry the canoe/kayak without compromising the aerodynamic performance of your vehicle. On the downside, the number of boat you can carry with this type of canoe/kayak rack is greatly limited.
  1. Vertical rack: If you like to utilize the crossbars of your car to their maximum capacity, then this is the right type of canoe/kayak rack for you. Unlike its horizontal counterpart, the vertical canoe/kayak rack allows you to stack multiple boats on their side, and secure them with a hardware that's also easy to remove. However, because of the additional height, passing through areas with low vertical clearance can get a bit tricky if you equipped your vehicle with this.
  1. J-style rack: Also known as j-cradles, this is probably the most commonly used one among the four types of rack that's available in the market. In comparison with the horizontal and vertical ones, the J-style canoe/kayak rack creates more space over your crossbars by letting you stack your boat on a 45-degree angle. If you're planning to lug other accessories over your roof, then go for this type of rack. Some J-style canoe/kayak rack can also be folded down if not in use.
  1. Hitch-mount rack: If you own a pick-up truck, then you're probably aware that its roof isn't long enough to let you put a boat over it. Carrying it on the truck bed is also not an option since that may cause irreparable damage. Lucky for you, you don't need to exchange your truck for a car with a longer roofline. Simply equip it with a hitch-mount rack and you're ready to go. On the downside, this type of rack is only useable if you purchase the horizontal ones as well, which means that choosing this may put a larger dent on your wallet.

Other important things to consider

Getting a canoe/kayak rack is more than just choosing the best type that works for your preferences; you also have to ensure that it's easy to install. If possible, choose a rack that comes with a complete set of installation hardware. You should also consider buying one that's simple to use; you wouldn't want to waste countless minutes trying to safely load your canoe/kayak over your car.
