Center Link Guides

Center Link Buyer's Guide

Summary

  • In a three-bar steering link, you’ll usually see a long metal arm on the center of everything. This bar is called the center link.
  • The center link, otherwise known as the intermediate rod, track rod, or relay rod, is a metal connecting rod that links the idler arm and the steering arm.
  • A center link may come with built-in ball sockets but some series only feature holes for ball socket stud installation.
  • The center link transmits the steering motion from the steering wheel through the idler arm and onto the inner tie rod ends.
  • It converts the sweeping arc of the steering arm to a linear motion that pushes and pulls the wheels to the intended direction.
  • There are four assemble positions on a typical center link. On each side of the rod are holes where the tie rod ends are mounted. A ball socket on each end then connects to the pitman arm and the idler arm.
  • The center link makes it possible for your front wheels to turn at the same time. Without it, steering your car properly may become almost impossible to do.
  • An OE center link replacement on CarParts.com may cost you around $15 to $218.

Depending on which type of steering linkage your car has, you’ll see a series of connecting arms attached to one another all the way to the steering arm. In a three-bar steering link, you’ll usually see a long metal arm on the center of everything, which is called the center link. If you’re having trouble with your vehicle handling, this is among the components you must check.

In this guide, you’ll learn about the things you need to take note of if you find yourself with a damaged or faulty center link.

What is a center link in a car?

Otherwise known as the intermediate rod, track rod, or relay rod, the center link is a metal connecting rod that links the idler arm and the steering arm. You may hear it interchanged with the term drag link but these two names are two different components for different steering linkage variations.

The center link is common on parallelogram steering linkages while the drag link is usually found on vehicles with four-bar linkages. The main difference between these two is that the center link connects directly to an idler arm while the drag link is to a pitman arm.

A center link may come with built-in ball sockets but some series only feature holes for ball socket stud installation. It’s basically the bar that’s holding every steering component in your car, such as the tie rod that connects to the steering arm that is connected to the wheel.

What does a center link do?

A steering linkage’s center link is the steel bar that holds all other steering and connecting arms such as the idler arm, tie rod ends, and the pitman arm together. It transmits the steering motion from the steering wheel through the idler arm and onto the inner tie rod ends. This is done by converting the sweeping arc of the steering arm to a linear motion that pushes and pulls the wheels to the intended direction.

Know your center link

There are four assemble positions on a typical center link. On each side of the rod are holes where the tie rod ends are mounted. A ball socket on each end then connects to the pitman arm and the idler arm. Despite its simple bow-like structure, the center link is just as important as all other steering components found in your car. Without it, the left tire will not be connected to one on the right.

Signs that the center link needs to be replaced

The center link can fail for many reasons. Usually, a cracked or bent center link can cause handling issues. The damage is often caused by natural wear, although frontal collision and rusting can be contributing factors. Here are the common signs you’ll notice if your center link starts to fail:

Car pulling to one side

When a car pulls to one side, it’s often a wheel alignment issue. A damaged center link may compromise the wheel alignment of your car. If the wheels are misaligned, you may find it harder to steer your vehicle. You’ll also notice that your vehicle may gradually pull to one side while cruising.

Uneven tread wear

Bad wheel alignment does not only result in your vehicle pulling to one side, but it may also cause uneven tire wear. Uneven tread wear decreases the lifespan of your tire and increases the likelihood of tire explosion or a flat.

Steering slips while turning the wheel

Steering failure can sometimes cause the steering wheel to slip while turning it. This could be caused by various faulty components but a damaged or disconnected center link is also one to suspect.

Knocking sound when turning

Metal clunking sounds while steering your car is a common symptom of different steering problems. Check the center link for loose connections as it may be rooting the noise. Check the surrounding components like the tie rod assemblies, pitman arm, idler arm, and steering arm.

Why is it important to replace a bad center link immediately?

The center link makes it possible for your front wheels to turn at the same time. Without it, steering your car properly may become almost impossible to do. This is why vehicle steering should be on-point all the time, especially when emergencies call for it. Driving with a bad center link or any other steering component is hazardous and should be avoided at all times.

How much is an OE center link replacement?

An OE center link replacement on CarParts.com may cost you around $15 to $218. It can be bought as a single piece, in sets of up to 9 various steering parts. There is also a wide range of brands and series to choose from to suit your preference. Remember to input your vehicle’s year, make, and model in the filter tab to narrow down your selection to the parts that fit your ride.

Center Link Replacement

Been driving over plenty of potholes lately? Then no wonder your center link is all busted up. Center links can end up being damaged due to harsh roadways or simply due to wear and tear. In any case, it's important that you replace your broken center link as soon as possible. Doing so is sure to provide you with safe and superb vehicle handling no matter where you go. Luckily, swapping out your substandard center link for a brand-new is a task you can do yourself. Just make sure you have the right tools and a never-say-die attitude and you'll have this DIY job done in no time.

Difficulty level: Easy

Tools you'll need:

  • Protective gloves and glasses
  • Socket
  • Wrench set
  • Hammer
  • Floor jack
  • Floor stands
  • Replacement center link

Step 1: Before staring any DIY repairs, take proper safety precautions by wearing protective goggles and gloves.

Step 2: Use a floor jack to raise your vehicle, and then remove the front tires. Place jack stands beneath your ride and remove the floor jack.

Step 3: Loosen the jam nut that holds the tie rod end using a wrench. Do this on both sides then tap it out of the knuckle using a hammer.

Step 4: Remove the outer tie rod end from the shaft. Do this on both sides then thread off the am nut of the tie rod sleeve.

Step 5: Use wrench, remove the nut found on the top of the center link.

Step 6: Remove both of the nuts that hold the pitman and idler arms.

Step 7: Separate the center link from the pitman and idler arms using a hammer or steering linkage puller. You have the option of using a tie rod fork, but this may damage the seals.

Step 8: Remove the center link and set it aside.

Step 9: Install new center link into place.

Step 10: Torque everything back into position and have your tires aligned if necessary.
