Choke Thermostat Guides

Pointers to Follow When Getting a Choke Thermostat

Pointers to Follow When Getting a Choke Thermostat

A standard component in vehicles with carburetor and ignition coil systems, the choke thermostat controls the idle of the vehicle by opening or closing the butterfly valve on top of the carburetor when the temperature rises or lowers respectively. This allows more or less airflow depending on the temperature of the engine. But while it is designed to work in hot temperatures, choke thermostats are exceptionally vulnerable to heat damage. And once they burn out, the thermostat must be replaced.

When buying a choke thermostat, here are some tips to remember:

Type

All of the choke thermostats found in cars today may have the same function of controlling engine idle, but they are divided into three types: divorced, hot air, and electric choke thermostats

Divorced choke thermostat: also known as the remote choke thermostat, this thermostat is basically a coiled bimetallic strip that rotates depending on the engine temperature. When the engine is cold, the thermostat coil contracts and prevents the choke plate from opening. But once the engine starts to heat up, the coil will start to unwind, releasing the tension from the choke plate and allowing air to flow through.

Hot air choke thermostat: this type of thermostat is similar to the divorced choke in that it is also composed of a coiled bimetallic strip that rotates with temperature change, but the coil is connected to a vacuum piston assembly. Hot air from the exhaust is redirected to the coil via a choke tube, causing the coil to relax and allow the vacuum piston to open the choke plate. A variation of this type of thermostat, the water choke thermostat, uses hot coolant from the radiator instead of air to manipulate the coil.

Electric thermostat: the newest of the three types, the electrical thermostat does not use air or water heated by the engine to control the choke plate. Instead, the thermostat is comprised of a coil of resistance heating wire that's connected to the battery. This allows the electric choke thermostat to open and close at a preset time thanks to the heating element.

These choke thermostats are not interchangeable, although there are kits available that can convert a hot air choke thermostat system into an electric one. So when buying a replacement thermostat, be sure that it is the correct type used in your vehicle.

OEM versus aftermarket

Choke thermostats with OEM certification mean that they are from the same manufacturer that made the stock thermostat in your car. This ensures that the thermostat is 100 percent compatible with your car's choke and is thus recommended to use. However some vehicle models, particularly in the case older or limited edition vehicles, may no longer have OEM thermostats available. For such cases, you will have to look towards aftermarket choke thermostats.

Kits

There are also choke thermostats that are sold as kits, which also includes the wiring harness and other components needed to replace the entire choke thermostat assembly. While it costs a bit more, kits are recommended to buy and install as it ensures the choke thermostat and its relevant components are in top shape.
