Do you ever wonder why you do not lose control of your car when driving on a bumpy road? This is all the work of a car’s suspension system. Composed of your vehicle’s tires, springs, shock absorbers, and linkages, the system is responsible for ensuring that your ride is smooth and comfortable.

One important component of a suspension system is called a coilover. Since there are different types of suspension systems, not all vehicles are equipped with one. But if you have one installed and you’re looking for a replacement, you are reading the right article.

What are coilover kits?

A coilover is usually composed of a shock absorber and a coil spring that are integrated into an assembly.  Usually, the coil spring encircles a specially designed shock absorber. Coilovers are usually mounted where your coil springs or MacPherson struts are supposed to be.

The main function of a coilover is to support the weight of the vehicle. They are also used for lowering a vehicle (since most of them are adjustable) and improving handling.

In order to understand coilovers more, let us look at the two major coilover components:

Shock body

Your coilover’s shock body works just like any shock absorber. Usually, a coilover’s upper mount is connected to the vehicle chassis while the lower mount is connected to the lower A-arm or the knuckle itself. Take note that this is greatly dependent on the configurations of your vehicle.

This component is responsible for reducing the vibrations caused by the chassis and the wheels. It also plays a part in controlling unwanted spring oscillations.

Spring

Generally, the main function of a spring is to absorb the impact caused by a variety of road conditions. Along with the shock, they work together to make sure that your tires remain in contact with the road.

Coilover vs Lowering Spring

Coilovers are often mistaken for lowering springs, but these two components are actually different. Although they are both capable of lowering a vehicle and improving handling, they are entirely different car components. For one, lowering springs do not have shock absorbers. They are also fixed and non-adjustable. Usually, lowering springs are similar to the OEM stock springs you can find on your vehicle, but only they are much shorter.

Some lowering springs are bought as a stand-alone component. But most of the time, they are also integrated into an assembly along with the strut.

Types of Coilover Kits

Coilover kits are classified into three categories: full-bodied coilover kit, sleeve coilover kit, and drag coilover kit.

Full-bodied coilover kit

This type of kit usually includes shock absorbers, pillowballs, top-mounts, and other installation hardware. It already comes with all other suspension components, so you do not need to worry about buying them.  Since it is a complete kit,  it is usually priced higher compared to its counterparts.

If you’re planning to upgrade your suspension, this may be the perfect choice for you.

Sleeve coilover kit

Since this type of kit does not come with the whole set, you will have the freedom to choose the other components according to your liking. However, you’ll have to know which part is compatible with your suspension system and which is not. This type of kit is also generally cheaper than full-bodied ones.

Take note, however, that this type of kit is designed for high-performance shock absorbers only.

Drag coilover kit

This coilover kit is suitable for drag racing because it is a lot stiffer than its counterparts. It maintains traction by not allowing the vehicle to put all its weight on the rear wheels.

Things to Consider When Looking for a Coilover Kit

If you’re thinking about upgrading your suspension or you’re just looking for a replacement coilover, it may be overwhelming to go through all the options. If you’re pressed for time, it may help to filter and narrow down your options. Here are some of the things to consider when looking for a coilover kit:

Spring Rate

One important thing to consider when choosing a coilover kit is its spring rate. Basically, it refers to the amount of weight that is needed to compress the spring for at least one inch. For example, if you’re aiming to improve handling and you do not mind a stiffer ride, it is best to choose a kit with a higher spring rate.

Again, all these things will depend on the configurations of your vehicle and your preference. If you’re unsure which coilover to choose, you may talk to your trusted mechanic about it.

Durability

Another important thing to consider when choosing coilovers or any car part is durability. Your car’s suspension system is exposed to a lot of stress, and investing in low-quality car parts may be risky. Not only will a poorly built coilover increase the chance of replacing your coilover kit earlier than expected, but it will also put you and your passengers’ safety at risk while on the road.

Compatibility

It is useless to buy a durable and high-quality part if it is not compatible with your vehicle. Although you won’t have any trouble finding a universal coilover kit, most kits in the market are vehicle specific. When buying coilover kits, make sure to check the product specification to ensure that what you are buying is compatible with your vehicle’s make and model.

How much does a coilover kit replacement cost?

Generally, coilover kits may cost around $500 to $1000.They can be sold as an individual part or in sets of two or four. There are options available just for the front, rear, and driver’s side or a combination of two locations, so it is best to check the product specification to know what is included in the set you want to buy.

Finding the right fit

To help you get the perfect coilover kit for your vehicle, enter your correct vehicle details into our search engine. You may also filter your options according to the location of the coilover, the brand, and even the price range you prefer.

Once you’re done, click search and browse through our wide variety of coilover kits. Make sure to choose the one that is compatible with your vehicle.

How to Choose the Best Coilover Kit to Upgrade Your Ride

Lowered stance and improved handling performance—these are just some of the main selling points of a coil over kit. It's considered as one of the most versatile and commonly used types of suspension system nowadays. With a number of manufacturers supplying coil over kits in the market, it can get quite tough to find one that suits your car properly. Sometimes it's not enough to just get the most expensive one; there are other factors you need to consider too. So if you're planning to upgrade your ride's performance and appearance using this kit, then you should check out some of these useful tips:

Three types to suit every driver's needs

A coil over kit comes in three different kinds: full-bodied, sleeve, and drag types. Choosing the best one out of these three usually depends on the driver's preferences as well as the driving applications. To make it easier for you to decide which coil over kit suits your vehicle best, here are some useful information about them:

  1. Full-bodied coil over kit: A full-bodied coil over kit comes with all the other suspension components that are essential to ensure a smooth-handling ride. This usually includes the shock absorbers, pillowballs, top-mounts, bump stops, and other installation hardware. With this type of coil over kit, you no longer have to go through the tough process of buying other suspension parts and figuring out if they're compatible with your ride's suspension system. It's the perfect choice if you currently have stock shock absorbers on your vehicle and you're planning to upgrade its suspension. On the downside, a full-bodied coil over kit is usually more expensive than the other types because of all its inclusions.
  1. Sleeve coil over kit: If you already have a high-performance aftermarket shock absorber outfitted on your vehicle, then the sleeve coil over kit is for you. Unlike its full-bodied counterpart, the sleeve coil over kit does not come in a set. This gives you the freedom to choose the other parts of your suspension system based on your preferences, not to mention that it's a lot cheaper too. However, keep in mind that this type of coil over kit is designed to work with high-performance shock absorbers only, so you should avoid using them with the stock ones that came with your car.
  1. Drag coil over kit: A drag coil over kit is suitable for drag racing application because it's a lot stiffer that the sleeve and full-bodies coil over types. If you own a front-wheel drive vehicle, then this is the type for you. A drag coil over kit helps maintain traction by preventing the car from putting all of its weight on the rear wheels. Unfortunately, because this kit is a lot stiffer, it may make your ride more uncomfortable too.

Other important tips to take into account

Spring rate is another important factor that you should consider before choosing a coil over kit for your car. If you want your car to handle better and a stiffer ride is not a big deal for you, then choose a kit with a higher spring rate. On the other hand, choose a kit with a lower spring rate if you prefer to be comfortable while you drive. You should prepare yourself for a bit more body roll, though, especially when taking tight turns.
