How to Install a Manual Diesel Glow Plug Switch
The diesel glow plug switch can be considered an indispensable part of your diesel engine. This is because it prevents you from encountering problems with your glow plugs, which enable your diesel engine to start. A manual diesel glow plug switch is a common variation to your car's original glow plug system. It can increase the longevity of your glow plugs because it enables them to be cycled only when needed. Installing a manual diesel glow plug switch is an automotive repair that even a novice can do. To install one, just follow this do-it-yourself guide below:
Difficulty level: Easy
Things you'll need:
- Momentary push button switch
- Crimping pliers
- Two crimps or wire nuts
- Wire tape
- Ring terminal
Step 1: Find and remove the white wire in the glow plug relay and then detach the terminal. The white wire will no longer be used so install a wire nut or a crimp on its end, seal it with tape, and store it away.
Step 2: Locate the blue wire for the wait to start light and cut it midway between the electrical controller and electrical connector. Put a wire nut or a crimp on the tip of the wire that goes inside the electrical controller and seal it with tape. Store the wire away because it will no longer be used.
Step 3: On the leftover blue wire, crimp about 12 inches of wire and put a ring terminal on the other tip. To enable your wait to start light to light up while the glow plugs are manually being cycled, insert the wire connector into the corresponding connector in the wiring harness. Install the other tip to the terminal on the glow plug relay where you removed the white wire.
Step 4: Connect a wire from your momentary push button switch to the terminal on the relay where you removed the white wire. This terminal is also where the blue wire should be installed. Don't opt for a toggle switch or a latching switch, which stays on even after you have let go of your hold on it.
Step 5: Connect your momentary push button switch's other leg to a good electrical ground, ideally to the engine block or frame.
Step 6: To illuminate the glow plugs, turn the manual glow plug switch on and keep your hold on it for seven to 10 seconds, release your hold, and then start your engine. You may repeat this process if needed but allow five seconds of interval between attempts. Also, make sure that you never illuminate the glow plugs beyond 15 seconds because this can cause damage to the glow plugs.
Installing a manual diesel glow plug switch enables you to have complete control of your glow plugs' cycle time and bypass the glow plug controller, which usually regulates electricity for the glow plug relay. In this setup, the glow plugs will only receive power anytime you hold down the manual diesel glow plug switch. Typically, glow plugs are cycled every time a vehicle is started.
