What's a Diesel Vacuum Pump?
As you perhaps gathered, the diesel vacuum pump is a component that's exclusively available on diesel engine vehicles. It's needed in such automobiles because diesel engine vehicles aren't equipped with a throttle butterfly that limits air flow, unlike gasoline engine vehicles. And a power brake system simply can't function without something that restricts air flow.

Which Diesel Vacuum Pump to Get?

How to Install a New Diesel Vacuum Pump
You can forget about your power brake working properly if your diesel engine vehicle isn't equipped with a functional diesel vacuum pump. A diesel vacuum pump provides the vacuum needed for the power brake's operation. Since it has a very vital function, it's best that you replace the pump as soon as the need arises. Step 1: Park your vehicle on a level surface. Make sure that the engine is cool before you get to work.
Step 2: Pop the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. After that, locate the power steering pump and place a drain pan under it.
Step 3: We'll be doing a lot of disconnecting. Disconnect the vacuum, the steering pump hose, and the oil pressure sender wires. Remove the oil pressure sender unit afterwards.
Step 4: This next step involves even more disconnections. With that said, you know what to do with the lubricating oil feed line (clue: disconnect it). After that, turn your attention to the pump assembly and remove the lower bolt that attaches it to the engine block.
Step 5: Remove the nut that connects the adapter to the steering pump. After that, remove the upper bolt that attaches the pump assembly to the engine block. You can now take out the pump assembly.
Step 6: Now, take out the nuts that connect the diesel vacuum pump to the pump assembly. Afterwards, separate the diesel vacuum pump from the adapter. Remove the coupling from the adapter as well.
Step 7: Finally, you can detach the adapter from the pump assembly. It's time to install the new diesel vacuum pump.
Step 8: Start the installation process by fitting spacers on steering pump studs. Next, install an O-ring on the adapter. Place the adapter on the pump studs afterwards.
Step 9: Fit nuts on the two upper pump studs and on the outboard stud. After that, install the coupling on the pump shaft. Make sure that the shaft drive tangs are fixed securely.
Step 10: Take note of the placement of the drive slots in the pump shaft. Rotate the drive gear in order to align the drive tangs on the shaft with the coupling. Make sure that the vacuum pump is secure in between the adapter and the coupling.
Step 11: Place a new gasket on the vacuum pump. Next, insert the upper bolt of the pump assembly in the gasket and mounting flange. Insert the lower bolt afterwards as well. Make sure that both bolts are secure.
Step 12: Position the flange on the steering pump inboard stud. Install the last adapter nut on the stud.
Step 13: Put back everything you took out earlier. Test drive your vehicle to verify your installation.
