Replacing a Broken Door Striker
With the constant opening and closing that car doors take from their owners, it's no surprise that they eventually get misaligned. From hard-to-close doors to annoying rattling noises from the latch, a loose, misaligned door can definitely be a bother. If it takes nothing less than slamming your door fiercely to get it to close, then your door striker needs a little fix up. Replacing this tiny U-shaped metal part can make all the difference to your door issues, all for a fraction of your time and minimal cost.

Things you'll need:
- Screwdriver set
- Replacement door striker
Since door strikers are relatively cheap replacement parts, it is wise to invest in sturdy, corrosion-resistant ones such as those that are zinc-coated.
Step 1: Mark the location of your old striker using a pencil.
Step 2: Unscrew the old striker and make sure that the area is free from wax that can accumulate from carwashes. If the door striker pins are worn or corroded, make sure to replace them as well.
Step 3: Place the new striker on the marked location and screw it in a bit loosely.
Step 4: Close your door to check the alignment. Move the striker around with your hammer until you figure out the exact position that will allow your doors to latch properly.
Step 5: Fully tighten the screws making sure that the striker plate is securely in place.
Step 6: Repeat the procedure for any remaining problematic door strikers.
While door strikers only cost around 20 to 50 bucks and about 15 minutes to replace, it's still advisable to perform regular maintenance on them. Cleaning debris that gather around the latch and applying lubricant about twice a year ensures a longer-lasting door striker plus the feel of a brand new door with that crisp closing sound.
