Dorman Fuel Tank Review
Certainly, when you hear the word fuel tank,
the only idea that comes to you is that this part is where your fuel is stored. But you are not that aware of the other functions that this component performs. Well, aside from serving as a receptacle for fuel, your fuel tank should also allow safe refilling, which means that no sparks should be triggered during the process. Venting of fumes is another function of this tank, which is why it typically has a vent tube or breather hose. Of course, your tank has a gauging mechanism that allows you to automatically determine the amount of remaining fuel in the tank. These are the most important characteristics that your fuel tank must have, but you have to at least get one that is safe in all conditions. When you need to replace this component, trying one from Dorman might be a good decision. But before buying its fuel tank, let us first see if it is up to scratch.

We installed this component on a 2001 Subaru Forester and a 2008 Chevrolet Tosca, and here is what we have to say:
Thumbs up
- The tank generally looked good. It was made of galvanized steel, was painted for corrosion-resistance, and came with the necessary peripherals.
- We had a quite challenging installation of the component, but everything turned out okay. We had to remove a lot of bolts and screws to have the unit into its position.
- We checked if the unit could really accommodate up to 18 gallons of fuel. We filled it up fully and found out that it could indeed hold that amount of fuel—not to the last bit, of course.
- This is one of the cheaper units out there.
Thumbs down
- The fuel tank check ball was obviously made of plastic. We were worried that this check ball would dissolve with the fuel if the temperature inside the tank escalated too much. Also, we were worried that it would obstruct the flow of gas to the fuel lines in case it got distended for some reason. This little component should have been made from China, which could be the reason for its questionable quality.
- The lack of vent support was also a worry because there would be no passage for fumes to escape. We hoped that we were not using a would-be time bomb by installing this unit instead of a vented one.
The verdict
With an affordable price and an enticing warranty, this Dorman fuel tank is definitely a good bet. However, you would have to live with the fact that gas fumes would be building up inside your fuel tank. If you are worried, then opt for one that could accommodate a breather hose. This unit also does not have a gauging mechanism, so that can be another downside for you. All in all, this is a good replacement for your old, dented fuel tank.
