There are two main groups for these controllers: the Proportional-based controls, which deliver smooth braking response that offers a direct proportional relationship between the vehicle's deceleration rate and braking power, and the Timed Brake Controllers, which are suitable for light-duty, economical, and basic towing requirements. These time-delayed controls have a predetermined amount of braking power and can be installed vertically, horizontally, or upside down.
