Driveshaft CV Joint Guides

Driveshaft CV Joint Buyer's Guide

Summary

  • A Constant Velocity or CV joint is a drivetrain component that connects the driveshaft to the transmission, allowing power to be delivered to the wheels at a constant speed.
  • Each joint is covered by an accordion-shaped boot made of rubber or plastic. This cover seals lubricants in while protecting the joint from kicked-up debris and moisture.
  • The CV joint is also designed to accommodate the suspension system’s up and down motion, allowing you to safely accelerate even as you swerve or go over speed bump.
  • These joints work in pairs of inner and outer CV joints. The inner CV joints connect the driveshaft/halfshaft to the transmission, while the outer CV joints connect the driveshaft to the wheel hub.
  • These joints are contained in a cup that allows it to move and rotate on an angle while transferring torque from the transmission to the wheel axle.
  • The cost of a replacement CV joint will vary depending on your vehicle’s year, make, and model. In general, OE replacement CV joints will cost you anywhere between $28 to $398.
  • There are three common symptoms of a failing driveshaft CV joint: cracked boot and lubricant leaks, clicking or popping noises, and shaky or rough acceleration.
  • Most CV joints should last the entire service life of the vehicle with no maintenance required. Problems typically arise when the protective boot is damaged.
  • Unlike other parts of your vehicle, a worn CV joint must only be replaced and never repaired. Driving with a damaged CV joint can lead to steering and suspension problems that could make your vehicle hard to control. To ensure the safety of your vehicle, have your driveshaft CV joint checked and replaced before it completely fails.

What is a CV joint?

A Constant Velocity or CV joint is a drivetrain component that connects the driveshaft to the transmission, allowing power to be delivered to the wheels at a constant speed. All front-wheel-drive systems are fitted with a CV joint at the end of each axle shaft (a total of two pairs of inner and outer CV joints). Some rear-wheel and four-wheel drive cars and trucks  also have CV joints.

If you look behind the wheel, you’ll see that each joint is covered by an accordion-shaped boot. This rubber or plastic boot has two jobs. The first is to act as a protective cover for the CV joint. The boot prevents kicked-up road debris from interfering with the movement of the joint. It also protects this metal component from rust and corrosion damage. Its second role is to make sure that the joint continues to move smoothly by creating a sealed environment that keeps the lubricant contained.

How does a driveshaft CV joint work?

The driveshaft CV joint is an essential part of the drivetrain that is responsible for transferring uniform power to your wheels despite changes in angle. Similar to how human joints provide flexibility, these parts also give you better control over your vehicle while making turns or driving over uneven surfaces.

These joints work in pairs of inner and outer CV joints. The inner CV joints connect the driveshaft/halfshaft to the transmission, while the outer CV joints connect the driveshaft to the wheel hub.

These joints are contained in a cup that allows it to move and rotate on an angle while transferring torque from the transmission to the wheel axle. The way that these components are designed also allows them to move with minimal friction. The CV joint is also designed to accommodate the suspension system’s up and down motion, allowing you to safely accelerate even as you swerve or go over speed bumps.

How much does a CV joint replacement cost?

The cost of a replacement CV joint will vary depending on your vehicle’s year, make, and model. In general, OE replacement CV joints will cost you anywhere between $28 to $398. You may purchase these parts individually or as part of a kit.

Bad CV joint symptoms

There are three common symptoms of a failing driveshaft CV joint: cracked boot and lubricant leaks, clicking or popping noises, and shaky or rough acceleration.

Cracked boot and lubricant leaks

The most common issue that causes CV joint failure is a damaged rubber boot. Outer CV joints that are connected to the wheels are more prone to cracks and tears due to the nature of their movement. If you notice  dark grease leaking out of the cover or sprayed on the wheel axle, it’s time to have it checked by a licensed mechanic.

Noticeable clicking or popping noises

Listen for any clicking or popping noises while making a turn. Check if the noise gets louder as you accelerate. This symptom is a common sign of a bad outer CV joint. It’s important to get this issue fixed right away because a damaged outer joint can cause you to lose control of your vehicle.

Shaky or rough acceleration

Failure of the inner CV joints may be less common but it is still possible. A common symptom for this issue is shaky acceleration. You may also notice clunking noises when switching from Drive to Reverse.

Why is a driveshaft CV joint replacement important?

Most CV joints should last the entire service life of the vehicle with no maintenance required. Problems typically arise when the protective boot is damaged. Your mechanic will usually check the condition of the boot during routine maintenance.

The most common issue caused by a damaged boot is a lubricant leak. As a mechanical component, the CV joint requires proper lubrication to continue its smooth operation. Once there is a leak, parts of the joint may grind together and disintegrate. Moisture and debris can also damage the joint, resulting in corrosion damage and failure.

Unlike other parts of your vehicle, a worn CV joint must only be replaced and never repaired. Driving with a damaged CV joint can lead to steering and suspension problems that could make your vehicle hard to control. To ensure the safety of your vehicle, have your driveshaft CV joint checked and replaced before it completely fails.

How to Install a New Driveshaft CV Joint

If you're driving a front-wheel drive, then you can expect your car to feature a driveshaft CV joint. This part creates a smoother and more efficient drive by transferring powered at variable angles. In simple terms, the driveshaft CV joint helps you steer your car with less resistance. So when you start to feel odd vibrations or hear strange noises when turning your steering wheel, be sure to replace your driveshaft CV joint.

Difficulty level: Easy to moderate

Tools you'll need:

  • 1/2-inch drive breaker
  • Large axle nut socket set
  • Jack and two jack stands
  • Rubber mallet
  • Driveshaft CV joint replacement

Step 1: Locate the side of the car where you plan to remove your driveshaft CV joint. Loosen the lug nuts of the targeted side's wheel. Lift the vehicle off the ground using a jack and jack stands.

Step 2: Completely remove the wheel from the car.

Step 3: Now that you've removed your wheel, you can easily locate your spindle. The spindle is usually found between the upper and lower ball joints. It should also be near the wheel bearing, axle, and wheels since these ball joints secure all these parts in place.

Step 4: Using a 1/2-inch drive ratchet and socket, remove the lower ball joint nut from the spindle. Completely detach the ball joint from the spindle by prying it down.

Step 5: Next, loosen the outer tie rod nut from the tie rod. Remove the nuts completely to take out the tie rod from the spindle.

Step 6: Remove the axle nut to loosen the outer end of the axle. Using a breaker bar and a large axle nut socket, completely take out the nut from its hold to the axle.

Step 7: Using a rubber mallet, gently tap the CV axle away from the ends of the spindle. When the CV axle is loose enough, you can remove the axle bar from the spindle with your hand.

Step 8: Disassemble your driveshaft CV by taking out the pry bar that connects it to the transmission. Push it towards the center of the car. Once the outer end has been removed from the rest of the spindle assembly, slide the driveshaft CV out of the transmission.

Step 9: The driveshaft CV joint connects your shaft to your transmission or transaxle. Once you've located it, simply pull the CV joint away from the transmission or differential.

Step 10: Insert your new Driveshaft CV Joint and reassemble all the parts in reverse order to complete your installation.
