Engine Torque Mount Guides

Engine Torque Mount Buyer's Guide

Summary

  • The engine torque mount stabilizes and limits the range of motion that an engine unit can twist or torque.
  • It supports the weight and torque of the engine and helps isolate excessive noise and vibration from the engine.
  • Vehicles have different engine bay configurations, so the torque mount location can vary depending on their make and model.
  • If your engine torque mount is broken, you need to get it fixed or replaced as it might affect nearby parts and electric components.
  • Excessive noise, vibrations, and visible damage to both the cushioning material and the metal bracket are signs that you need to replace your engine torque mount soon.
  • A replacement engine torque mount costs anywhere from $2 to $100.

The engine is made up of a lot of moving metal parts that emit a lot of undesirable sounds and vibrations. However, these effects cannot be felt inside the passenger cabin because the engine is secured by a set of motor mounts.

What is a motor mount and how is it different from an engine torque mount? When should you replace your vehicle’s torque mount? Find out the answers to these questions and more with this informative guide.

What Is an Engine Torque Mount?

The engine torque mount stabilizes and limits the range of motion that an engine unit can twist or torque. This component stops the engine from turning as it runs or as it comes to a stop.

What Does an Engine Torque Mount Do?

The purpose of torque mounts is to support the weight and torque of the engine. It also helps isolate excessive noise and vibration from the engine which may cause discomfort for the passengers and the driver of the vehicle.

Why Is an Engine Torque Mount Important?

The engine torque mount helps keep the engine in place and keeps it from twisting. As this component limits the movement of the engine, other important components of the vehicle are protected from excessive engine torque. These components include the exhaust system and mechanical parts like the throttle and the gear shift.

The engine torque mount also helps prevent transverse engines from rocking as the vehicle accelerates or brakes. Transverse engines are oriented perpendicular to the vehicle’s direction and are typically used in front-engine, front- and all-wheel drive vehicles. However, there are exceptions. The fact that the mass and torque are found at the front of the vehicle in the transverse engine set-up means that handling can be quite tricky.

Is the Engine Torque Mount Different than the Motor Mount?

The engine is made of various moving parts and components that cause a lot of vibration. Without the proper stabilizing equipment in place, the engine may produce uncomfortable shaking throughout the vehicle. Even worse, the engine might come loose and get damaged. Motor mounts help avoid these situations.

So what are motor mounts? Car motor mounts, also called engine motor mounts or powertrain mounts, are used to fasten the engine or the transmission to the body or frame of the vehicle. These mounts are steel brackets that are typically covered with rubber or polyurethane, which help dampen the excessive shaking and noise coming from the engine.

These mounts are bolted into place and are located in strategic points around the engine. However, some motor mounts are filled with liquid. These liquid-filled engine mounts help decrease engine vibration even further.

As discussed above, the torque mount prevents the engine from twisting. The torque mount is a type of engine mount that’s made of rubber or polyurethane-lined steel. The rubber or polyurethane helps cushion the excessive twisting movement from the engine, while the steel backing connects to the engine on one side and the body or frame of the vehicle on the other side.

Different vehicles have different engine bay configurations, and so the torque mount location can vary depending on the vehicle’s make and model. Although, in front-wheel drive vehicles, the torque mount is typically located between the top of the engine and the body of the vehicle.

When to Replace an Engine Torque Mount

The engine torque mount may last the vehicle’s lifetime, although, for some vehicles, signs of wear may start to appear after five years. Transmission mounts usually last longer than other engine mounts, but you should always check your owner’s manual for the recommended service interval for these parts.

It’s important to replace a vehicle’s engine torque mount once it becomes faulty. If your engine torque mount is broken, it might affect nearby parts and electric components. In worst-case scenarios, the engine may suffer considerable damage as a result of being twisted or flung around inside the engine compartment.

A broken engine torque mount can also affect the lifespan of other motor mounts. The other mounts will inevitably receive the extra stress and torsion that the broken torque mount cannot handle anymore. A broken torque mount also allows for excessive vibration and movement that can put even more stress on various components such as the exhaust.

Symptoms of a Bad Engine Torque Mount

It’s important to be familiar with the signs that the engine torque mount is failing to prevent further damage to the engine and its surrounding components and parts. As soon as you spot a combination of the following symptoms, it’s ideal to consult a repair guide for tips and instructions on how to address the issue or take your vehicle to a repair shop.

Below are some of the symptoms of a failing engine torque mount:

Clunking and other unusual noise

Unusual noises coming from the engine compartment may indicate that the engine torque mount is failing. The engine may also rattle or squeak as the driver shifts gears.

Excessive engine vibration

Another common symptom of a broken engine torque mount is excessive engine vibration. In some cases, the shaking is more noticeable at idle and with the transmission engaged. A noticeable jolt may also be felt when the driver shifts into drive or reverse or when accelerating or decelerating.

Visible cracks, tears, and separation of the dampening material

Engine torque mounts usually have rubber dampening material to help lessen the sounds and uncomfortable tremors from the engine. Once damaged, the dampening material’s ability to cushion the engine vibrations may be affected.

Visible damage to the steel bracket

The steel bracket helps secure the engine to the body of the vehicle. If this component of the torque mount fails, it may produce more noise and allow the engine to “wiggle” around in the engine compartment.

How Much Does a Replacement Engine Torque Mount Cost?

A replacement engine torque mount costs anywhere from $2 to $100. The price depends on its brand, quantity, and compatibility with your vehicle’s specific year, make, and model.

Replacement torque mounts are sold individually, in sets of two or four, or in kits. Kits typically include an entire set of motor mounts, including the torque mount itself. These mounts are also sold depending on their location in your vehicle (front, rear, passenger, and driver’s sides).
