Parts that aren't readily visible tend to get neglected until they start malfunctioning. One such example is the floor pan of your vehicle. Hidden behind your carpet and everything else you place above it, the floor pan is often forgotten until it starts to exhibit signs of wear and tear.

If not regularly maintained, you might just be surprised at how rusty your floor panels have gotten. Neglect and constant exposure to the elements can result in a failing floor pan. When this happens, consider installing floor pan repair panels to replace the rusty, damaged areas.

Read on to learn everything you need to know about floor pan repair panels.

What is a floor pan repair panel?

A floor pan repair panel is a prefabricated sheet of metal used to replace floor panels that have been damaged or corroded. This sheet of metal is part of a larger whole that makes up your car's metal flooring. The floor pan also makes up the structural and external panels of your vehicle.

So when your floor pan begins showing symptoms of erosion and disfiguration, you need to have it replaced with a floor pan repair panel. Most floor pan replacement panels are covered with a protective coating to prevent rust from forming again.

How does a floor pan repair panel work?

A floor pan repair panel works exactly like a floor pan. This sheet of metal stamping is welded into the floor or underside of your vehicle. This panel is used to replace the damaged parts of your vehicle floor. It comes in different fits and sizes, depending on the location and extent of what you need to replace on your metal flooring. Replacement floor pans are sometimes sturdier than your original floor pan.

Why is a floor pan repair panel important?

The importance of a floor pan repair panel lies in its fit, location, and size. In the past, car owners had to replace the entire metal floor of a vehicle regardless of the corroded patches' size. Not only is this a waste of perfectly usable metal, but it is also a lot of work to remove, replace, and weld.

With a floor pan repair panel, you can replace parts of your floor pan without taking the entire metal flooring out. Floor pan repair panels come in different fits, sizes, and locations. There are floor pan repair panels for the passenger side, driver side, front, rear, and any combination of these locations.

How does a floor pan fail?

There are several ways a floor pan could fail. As your car's floor pan is usually hidden from plain sight, it can be difficult to tell something has gone wrong.

Frequent exposure to the elements is one of the primary triggers of a failing floor pan. Floor pans are especially vulnerable to rust and corrosion during the hurricane season. Water could gather under the carpet or vinyl flooring of your vehicle, causing rust to form. Other elements like mud, dirt, and snow could also contribute to the rusting of your floor pan.

Symptoms of a bad floor pan

The symptoms of a bad floor pan are pretty straightforward. A damaged floor pan is immediately apparent with its rusty, corroded exterior. A failing floor pan can also expand and have holes in it. Other symptoms of a damaged floor pan include chipped, crusty parts on the metal flooring with the most rust concentration. A rusty floor panel is especially brittle and can chip without warning.

At the first sign of a faulty floor pan, act fast. Don't wait for the rust and corrosion to spread as you can still choose to clean or repair just one panel. In the event of a replacement, make sure to choose the right floor pan repair panel for your vehicle.

How much is a floor pan repair panel?

A floor pan repair panel costs anywhere from around $50 to $600, depending on your vehicle's type, year, make, and model. Floor pan replacement costs could also vary on the location of your floor panel. For example, the cost of a front floor pan repair panel varies from floor pan repair panels located on the passenger side, the driver side, outer, or the rear.

Just because you don't see it, it doesn't mean it's not there. This is the sad predicament of the floor panel, hidden from the eyes of every car owner. One problem caused by such circumstance is that any damage to them can go undetected. That is why many car owners are surprised to see the amount of rust eating away the metal underside of their vehicles when they lift out the carpet from the floor. These panels are basically pre-fabricated sheets of metal that all fit together to form the metal flooring of your car. Perhaps a small amount of rust is eating away part of your floor panel and you just want to patch it up. Maybe you'd like to do a thorough job and replace the whole metal sheet lining the floor of your car. Whatever you'll need, there will be an appropriate floor pan repair panel for you.

So how much will you need to shell out for these floor pan repair panels?

Costs of these floor panels pretty much depend on their size. The smaller floor pans can set you back about $40 while the largest ones easily cost hundreds of dollars. If there is only some minor damage to your car, then getting a small appropriate repair panel will be enough. Getting anything bigger would be wasteful.

Most floor pan repair panels are made of heavy duty automotive steel to ride out any harsh conditions, they may even be though than the original body of you. Aside from that, most floor pans are also covered with protective coating to prevent rust.

Will you need anything else to install floor pans?

Putting in a new floorpan isn't as as putting together pieces of a puzzle. There are some specialized tools that you'll need to do the job. You can either buy them, or for the frugal of you, borrow one from your neighbor. Here are some of the tools you'll need:

  • Floor panel installation tools ? You'll need some way to join your new floor panel with the rest of the metal lining of your car. For this type of job, you'll need tools like rivet guns and welders.
  • Specialized cutting tools ? Cutting tools include reciprocating saws, grinders and blowtorchs. If you're looking to replace the old flooring in your vehicle, then you'll need one of these tools to cut them out.

  • Floor pan repair panel
  • Reciprocating Saw
  • MIG welder
  • Welding helmet
  • Welding gloves
  • Screwdriver or socket wrench

Step 1: Park your car in a cool shaded area.

Step 2: Remove everything from the interior of the car including the seats, consoles and other accessories.

Step 3: Carefully remove the carpet from the flooring to expose the metal sheet underneath. Some carpets may be secured by screws or bolts so use the proper tools to remove them.

Step 4: Drill a hole around the edge of the area you are replacing. Make sure the hole is big enough to fit the blade of the reciprocating saw.
