GMC Jimmy Guides

There was a time in American automobile history when all you could mostly see on the roads were either big muscle cars or station wagons. The power of the muscle cars was a direct attraction while the space and cargo capabilities of the station wagon was ideal for many families. Who would have thought that one day these two attributes were to be merged and create a vehicle that today could be found in every nook and cranny of the world. The Sport Utility Vehicle, its versatility is boundless, many people has embraced the concept since it came out roughly four decades ago. Even though it didn't exactly make a powerful leap and bounds to the hearts of the people, nowadays it is all that is being talked about.

GMC was one of the first ones to see the potential of the SUV market. From the early 60's they have been producing full-size and compact SUV's. One of them is named the Jimmy. The full-size Jimmy was produced from 1969 based on the full-size Chevrolet C/K pickup truck chassis. The big Jimmy was soon renamed as the Yukon in 1992 and up to know is still a big seller. The smaller S-15 Jimmy used the compact Chevrolet S-10 truck chassis. It was produced from 1983 through the early 2000s, when the GMC Envoy effectively replaced the Jimmy. For all those years, the Jimmy provided a great deal of reliable and dependable service to the people.

As newer SUV's come out in the market, plush interiors and more innovative designs are coming out to cope up with the changing times. Many GMC Jimmy, the full-size and compact, still roam the streets of the country. This is due to the fact that GMC has instilled in tem competent parts that has withstood the test of time and the elements. Like any vehicle though, its moving gears and parts are prone to deterioration and wear and tear. If proper care is not provided you may soon have to say goodbye to a trusted old friend.

Luckily, unlike before, looking for high quality GMC Jimmy Parts is now easily attainable. There was a time when you had to wait for a long time for a part to arrive because there was only limited source. Now, with the proliferation of aftermarket producers that provide high quality GMC Jimmy parts based on OEM specifications, these parts could replace the ones that are damaged and wont affect the other parts that are still in good working condition. Making repairs won't be a hassle anymore, you could do all the research and shopping for your GMC Jimmy part all at the comfort of your own home.

Tips on Winter-Proofing Your GMC Jimmy

In terms of performance, the GMC Jimmy is one of those midsize SUVs that can get the job done while still providing interior comfort and great on-board technology. However, no matter how capable and high-end your vehicle may be, it doesn't matter comes the winter season. All vehicles become equal when faced with thick inches of snow. In fact, some drivers can't even get to the grocery because their cars are stuck in snow or aren't starting or running properly. Don't let this happen to you. There are ways for you to prepare your car for the winter season and still be able to flow through a few inches of snow. Below are some tips on how you can winter-proof your Jimmy:

  • Check the oil and coolant levels.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that your car becomes thirstier when they are in a cold driving condition. In this case, you should make sure that your engine's oil level is what it should be to keep your engine running smoothly. Aside from engine oil, you should also make sure that you have the right mixture of coolant and water in the radiator; it should be a 50:50 mix. This will help the water stay in liquid form even below freezing point. If that water in your engine freezes, the temperature could go up, and the engine will stop working—leaving you stranded in the snow.

  • Check the windshield wiper blades and wiper fluid.

Poor visibility is dangerous for driving during the winter; you will not be able to see the road. Hence, it is very important to keep your windshield clear and clean before heading out into a snowed road. Always make sure your wiper blades are properly functioning. It is advised that you replace your vehicle's wiper blades at least once a year. On the other hand, see to it that your windshield washer fluid is always topped up and that you have enough supply. Make sure to buy the right washer fluid, and never use ordinary water as it freezes easily and would be rendered useless in extremely cold weather. You can also get windshield cover to protect your GMC Jimmy from getting frozen windscreen while in the garage.

  • Check your vehicle's battery and other electrical components.

When your car's battery fails, your engine also fails. In harsh and snowy weather, the battery gets drained easily. In fact, battery failure is one of the most common causes of car breakdowns during the winter season. Therefore, checking your vehicle's batteries is an important step in winter-proofing your vehicle. Look for any sign of damage where your battery is connected to the car. Replace damaged batteries or have it repaired before winter comes. Any battery that is more than five years old may have a hard time performing during the cold—you may need to replace it. You can also install a battery charger. This clips onto the positive and negative terminals to give the battery an extra boost during driving.

  • Invest in winter tires.

It doesn't matter whether your Jimmy is equipped with all-season tires, you should still get winter tires. All-season tires are not the exact answer to driving on snow as they may fail to perform during harsher road conditions. A good set of winter tires will cost only around $400, and they can provide you with maximum traction and great handling on slippery surfaces.

If you'd rather not buy another set of tires, the workaround is to make sure that your tires are kept at proper pressure. Tires without proper pressure will have a tough time pushing through snow, and you'll feel like hydroplaning on water instead of driving on road surface. Keep in mind that for every 10 degrees the weather drops, your tires lose a pound of pressure. Always bring pressure gauge with you to ensure that your tires are always inflated to the recommended PSI level. You should also make sure that your tires have at least 3mm of tread for winter driving.

GMC Jimmy: Two Generations of Strength and Style

The GMC Jimmy is a four-wheel drive SUV that was designed and produced by the GMC division of General Motors. The Jimmy and its so-called twin, which was the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, were released in 1983. Both vehicles belong to the mid-size SUV category. With its robust body and stylish design, the GMC Jimmy produced two generations of first-rate SUVs.

The early years: first generation (1983-1994)

The first batch of GMC Jimmy models were initially called the GMC S-15 Jimmy. The original S-15 was specifically smaller than the full-size K5 Blazer, but they were both available only with a two-door body style. Engine-wise, the GMC Jimmy was originally offered with a 2.0-liter OHV four-cylinder engine. This engine, with its 83 horsepower, was not a good match for Jimmy’s sturdy stance. Good thing there was another engine option, which was the 2.8-liter V6 engine that can deliver a higher 110 horsepower.

Since the state of California has stricter emissions standards, the original 2.0-liter engine of the GMC S-15 Jimmy was replaced with the Isuzu-made 1.9-liter I4 gasoline engine. This and the other diesel engines were ditched and replaced by the 2.5-liter engine after 1985. When 1986 came, the V6 engine received a throttle-body fuel injection.

The first four-door GMC S-15 model was made available in 1990. This version received a wheelbase that is 6.5 inches longer than the original S-15. The four-door GMC S-15 Jimmy was offered in both four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive variants. For the 1992 model year, the “S-15” label was removed from the GMC Jimmy. In the same year, the anti-lock brake feature became standard. The 1994 model, which was the last one for the first generation, received minor interior and exterior modifications.

The makeover and the upscale version: second generation (1995-2001)

A bigger GMC Jimmy was offered for the 1995 model year. The new model’s upgraded appearance captured the interest of many customers because of the curvier outline and a more family-friendly structure. Protective airbags and additional space for storage also came with the new version of GMC Jimmy. During this time, all Jimmy models were only equipped with the 4.3-liter V6 engine.

In 1998, the GMC Jimmy’s dash board panel was ergonomically improved with bigger control buttons and knobs. The size of the door handles increased significantly, and the airbags for the passengers became standard. 1999 came with brand-new foldable side-view mirrors. The millennium gave the GMC Jimmy a fascia makeover through the redesigned front bumpers. The production and distribution of GMC Jimmy ended in 2001 with the release of the GMC Envoy line.

Celebrating the GMC Jimmy legacy

A Diamond Edition GMC Jimmy was released to honor the 30th year anniversary of the Jimmy label. The Jimmy label was first used in the full-size truck released in 1970. The 1970 GMC Jimmy model and its Chevrolet K-5 Blazer counterpart were actually the predecessors of the 1983 models of GMC (S-15) Jimmy and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The Diamond version sported an aluminum-made silver plate, which goes around the lower portion of the SUV. It was also equipped with leather seats adorned with diamond patterns and a special diamond logo.
